changed when major ethical
issues are involved and when
easy alternatives are not
available. In the case of
children of non-Jewish
mothers, he said, "a better
way" exists: Try to persuade
a non-Jewish mother who is
sympathetic enough to
Judaism to agree to raising
her child as a Jew to convert
along with her child; that fail-
ing, convert the infant.

Women Want
Kahane Ban

New York (JTA) — The
Women's League for Conser-
vative Judaism recently
sharply condemned the
policies of Rabbi Meir Ka-
hane and called for a con-
gregational boycott of his ap-
pearances at synagogues.
A resolution adopted at the
convention of the 200,000-
member League stated that
"Racism of any sort must be
opposed by Jews everywhere
as being antithetical to the
teachings *of Judaism. We call
upon the institutions of con-
servative Judaism and others
to speak out against the
policies of Meir Kahane and
other anti-democratic forces
in Israel and vigorously op-
pose any synagogue or
organizational platform to
those (like Kahane) who
espouse such destructive
methods and goals."
Kahane, who organized the
Jewish Defense League in the
U.S. in the 1960's and subse-
quently immigrated to Israel
where he formed the Kach
Party and is now its sole
representative in the Knesset,
has called for the expulsion of
Arabs from Israel.

Iranian Jew
Arrested

Paris (JTA) — Iran's only
Jewish member of Parlia-
ment, Manoucher Kalimi
Nikruz, has been arrested and
charged with "moral tur-
pitude", the Thheran English-
language daily Teheran Times
reported last week. Papers
quoting the Iranian daily say
Nikruz, a 40-year old phar-
macist, is being detained in
Thheran's central prison in
spite of his parliamentary im-
munity.
Nikruz, who was elected to
the Majlis, the Iranian
legislative assembly two and
a half years ago, has been
charged by the Islamic state
prosecutor with "illicit sexual
relations."
