her attacker as well as a Jew.
Her fears and ours that this
attack was a provocation are
now a reality. The KGB con-
tinues its harrassment of her
every day and she is followed
everywhere.
We are asking for people to
write to the Soviet Embassy
in Washington, D.C., to the
Secretary of State and to Mr.
Gorbechev in Moscow protest-
ing the treatment of Mila
Volvovsky.
The letters and telegrams
helped Ari and I know they
will help Mila (Mrs. Leonid
Volvovsky, Krilova Street
14A Apt. 115, Gorky RSFSR,
USSR).

A New Policy
On Soviet Jews?

I was intrigued by three
items in connection with
Soviet Jewry (Jewish News,
Nov. 14), either for their pos-
itive meaning or for their
implications to be greatly
guarded against.
You relate an episode
about the well-known Dr.
Arnold Zuroff, who was called
upon to perform emergency
root canal dental treatment
for one of the Moiseyev dan-
cers who performed at the
Masonic Temple a few days
ago. The doctor was given
tickets by the patient for the
show and asked to visit
backstage after the show.
This he duly did; but along
with him he had a placard
about mistreatment of Soviet
Jews. Was this episode a
managed indication that the
Soviets are willing to open
dialogue with American
Jews?
Also it is reported that a
dancer came out from the
temple and approached some
of the Jewish protesters
gathered outside with what
seemed to have been an
encouraging gesture. Not to
look for hidden meanings, but
there is a great likelihood
that the Russian troupe had
a number of Jewish members
and they were instructed to
establish contact with Ameri-
can Jews.
It is also reported that at
the European Conference for
Security and Cooperation, re-
cently held involving some-
thing like 30 nations, the
Soviet delegation received
Jewish protesters with unex-
pected cordiality. Was this a
show of a change of policy
toward Jews engineered by
Mikhail Gorbachev? Or are
all these deceptions to lure
American Jews away from
pursuing energetically mass
action to secure amelioration
of the plight of our Russian
brethren? The answer must
be, let us keep our prop-
aganda powder dry in any
event, especially for the
forthcoming Summit II in
Washington.
