Middle Age Probed Through `Mini-Lectures' Staff Report When Marilyn Rowens of Livonia criticizes the human condition, she does it with a sense of humor. She has just published her fourth booklet of cartoons and mini-lectures, entitled Be- yond the Middle Years, at which she takes a semi-comic look at life during middle age. Peppered with her self- drawn, stick figure cartoons, the booklet is mildly philosophical, somewhat cyn- ical and oftentimes provides its reader with some "Oh, yes, I've been in that predi- cament" feelings. Among her comments are these examples: "I know there are things in life that are inevitable: frustration, disappointment, loneliness, even death, but laundry?"; "I had my whole life planned. I knew exactly what I was going to do. I had every de- tail outlined, but I lost my notes." "If life is a game. When it's over, how will I know if I've won?" A volunteer at the Jewish Home for Aged and Jewish Federation Apts. for many years, Mrs. Rowens published her booklet, the fourth of a series, "because I love them (the cartoons) and want to share them." She says of her cartoon books, "I create where I am in life." She said another purpose in publishing the cartoons is to show that "beyond the middle years is a very excit- ing time of our lives." Mrs. Rowens often uses the books in the motivational talks she gives to community groups. "They touch people of all ages," she said. 52 Friday, November 28, 1986 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Her previous cartoon mini- lecture booklets were Mini- Lectures on the Human Con- dition, It Doesn't Hurt When I Laugh and The Happy Humanist. They are self- published. The booklets are available at Borders Book Store and Pages and Pages. Syria Now Armed With Nerve Gas London (JTA) — The Sun- day Thlegraph reported last Sunday that Libya has given Syria deadly nerve gas weapons, traceable to the Soviet Union, which could be used with devastating effect on Israel's main cities. The report, by the news- paper's defense correspon- dent, cited Western in- telligence sources for the in- formation. According to the writer, the Syrians can use the nerve gas warheads on their Soviet-made SCUD missiles. The chemical warheads could kill everyone within a 25 mile radius and render a ci- ty uninhabitable for about 24 hours after the attack, the Telegraph said. The SCUD is a vehicle-launched surface-to- surface missile with a range of more than 160 miles. Until now, SCUDs in the arsenals of Libya, Syria and Iran were thought to be armed with conventional warheads in contrast to the Soviet weap- ons which are nuclear-armed. According to the Thlegraph,
