See what happens to it to- morrow and the day after that. You will know that you have reached the ultimate when you are just a little bit short of the infinite. I am none too original in this idea. In fact your chil- dren have been using it on you for a long time, longer than you imagine. Children have antenna and sophisti- cated data banks that have incredible label crunching capabilities. They see beyond our titles and rationaliza- tions. The name of Orthodox isn't too impressive to a young teen when he or she sees parents basically un- moved by the Judaism that they are living. Reform sounds empty if a parent doesn't have much to show for it. Doing Judaism for the kids doesn't seem to work and the numbers prove it. Our kids are too busy corn- putating the real figures. Therefore, to all of my col- leagues in the Federation seeking to unite and main- tain, I think we all have to go back to work on the basic one, two and threes of Jewish life. We must reassess what moves us, what gives us strength and motivation to do more. Obviously we will not all come to the same conclu- sions, but an inescapable truth does arise. No matter what label we have transfixed upon our- selves we do share a collec- tive unconscious. The story of our People, its history and philsophies, its books and re- sources, are as much a part of every Jew as they are of any Jew. This knowledge is the spring of motivation just as much as it is the glue that binds us. Ignorance is the volatile fuel of intolerance. Therefore, we as Jews must look intensely towards what we share not so much for per- suasion as cohesion. Every opportunity to learn about the Jewish experience as it was and as it is should be emphasized. Even for those Jews convinced that what was should no longer be, is there any evil more primitive than ignorance? Our local Federation must be a leader in this field and come into step with the na- tional trends of federations, namely enhanced support for Jewish education. In the classroom and without, every opportunity to advance our knowledge of ourselves will bring us that much closer to- gether. We must all be will- ing to teach and to learn — our numbers depend upon it. LETTERS With Or Without Holocaust Center I read with interest Robert Roth's article about problems in the Holocaust Center ("Holocaust Center Must Go Beyond One Man's Dream," Nov. 14). My main interest in his article was his revelation of non-existent curriculum about the Holocaust in public schools and for the general public. There are a few survivors, who are not associated with the HMC, who have been in- volved in educating ... about /-' the Holocaust. I give lectures and I exhibit art works deal- ing with the Holocaust in public schools, churches, ; organizations, museums and colleges ... - About Rabbi Rosenzveig and the HMC, when I asked - him to permit me to .display my art work pertaining to life and death in the. 'exter- mination camps, on a tem- porary basis, his answer was if I would not donate some of 's my art work to the HMC, he could not display my sculptures at all. I also registered with his staff as a volunteer lecturer. So far I did not receive any calls ... . _ We, the few survivors who devoted our lives to the cause N of the Holocaust will go on > with or without the Holocaust Center. Henry Friedman Oak Park Support Helped Ari Volvovsky Because of the massive mailings on behalf of Leonid (Ari) Volvovsky's treatment in the prison camp and the concern for his health, he has received medical treatment and is doing better. His job has been changed and he is no longer being forced to do hard labor but instead is working at a sewing factory, sitting down and running a machine. My family and I truly are grateful for the out- pouring of support given to this courageous man. Now we are asking for the same help on behalf of Aris' wife, Mila. Several weeks ago, when Eli Weisel visited the Soviet Union, Mila attempted to meet with him. Upon leaving her apartment in Gorky for the trip to Moscow shw was attacked by a man and sent to the hospital suffering a se- vere concussion. While in the hospital a man came to visit her and identified himself as Continued on next page Buy your new Jeep in Canada • Immediate delivery to U.S • No duty Call Hedy Guttman (519)255-3029 For all occasions Nation-Wide Delivery 772-4350 RODNICK & UNGER Law Offices 771-7800 and gallery 1, .01M: THAT/ ARE ASMOINDERFULTO*11(tAltfilfWiltgY;: ARDTO-B610LIX FROM POTTERY TO BANDBLOwr4 GLASS, PAINTINGS TO ROME ACCESSORIES.
