Friday, November 28, 1986 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

New York (JTA) — Sen.
Daniel Moynihan (D.NY) has
vowed to continue efforts to
move the United States Em-
bassy in Israel from Tel Aviv
to Jerusalem. "The State of
Israel has a right under in-
ternational law to declare
Jerusalem its capital," the
lawmaker told 300 guests at
the presentation of the

Fourth Annual Defender of
Jerusalem Award at the Met-
ropolitan Museum of Art.
"Jerusalem is far more
than just a political capital,"
Moynihan declared. "It em-
bodies and symbolizes three
millenia of Jewish accom-
plishments and aspirations.
The United States govern-
ment would do well to follow
Costa Rica's example."
Costa Rica was the first
country to put its Embassy in
Jerusalem despite pressure
from other countries and in-
ternational bodies.

Dealers Face
Prosecution

New York (JTA) — The
disclosures of the Reagan
Administration recently that
it approved covert shipments
of American weapons to Iran
"have no bearing whatsoever"
on the prosecution of 17 de-
fendants, including four Is-
raelis, charged with conspi-
racy to sell American
weapons to Iran, Assistant
U.S. Attorney Lorna
Schofield told a court.
The defendants in the case
face charges of conspiracy to
resell $2.5 billion of Ameri-
can arms to Iran and of fal-
sifying the documents needed
to gain U.S. approval for the
sales.
Schofield told Federal
Judge Leonard Sand that she
had discussed the case with
Justice Department officials
and people in the National
Security Council who in-
formed her that this case is
not related to any of the
covert arms shipments ap-
proved or orchestrated by the
Reagan Administration.
Defense attorneys chal-
lenged the prosecution's
statement, noting a remarka-
ble convergence of the ac-
counts of defendants in the
case and the events con-
firmed by the Reagan Ad-
ministration and other
sources in the past weeks.

Cardinal Says
No Convent
At Auschwitz

.

Montreal (JTA) — Cardinal
Joseph Glemp, the Primate of
Poland, recently assured a
delegation of the Canadian
Jewish Congress that there
are no plans at this time to
erect a Carmelite convent on
the site of the former Ausch -
witz concentration camp in
Poland.
In a meeting here with the
delegation, the Cardinal said
that he had received letters
from the World Jewish Con-
gress and other groups re-
garding their deep concern
over the reported plan to erect
the convent.
