"I learn to appreciate much more now that Israel is a Jewish State. Again, it's a fact that I took for granted when I lived there. It's for sure, I go downstairs, there is a Jewish friend and this is a Jewish teacher and here's a Jewish prime minister. Ev- erything is Jewish. It's a thing that we mustn't take for granted, it's something very unique." Omri will return to Israel in time for the Chanukah va- cation, then must complete his senior year of high school; he gets no credit for his schooling here. After a two- week vacation next summer, he must enter the army and serve for three years. Man- datory military service is a major difference between Is- raelis and Americans, Omri feels, as is the two nation's relative security concerns. At one of Bob Mellen's Op- timist Club meetings, Omri reports, he was asked, "What do you need to do to cross the border to Lebanon?" or "What is the procedure if you want to go visit Jordan?" "I told them I just need to take a tank and weapons and invade Lebanon if I want to see Lebanon," he said with a laugh. "This is a matter that for a lot of Americans, it's difficult to understand. Because you have here the Ambassador Bridge over the Detroit River, and you just want to cross to Canada you go and the Canadian (customs agent) asks you, 'You are American? You say, 'Yeah, yeah' and 'O.K., have a nice day.' "It's difficult to, explain what it means, 'border.' To explain that border is the border between death and life. Behind the border, on the Israeli side, is the life, if you cross it, the death. Be- tween it there are mines, and there are bombs and there are soldiers, there are fences. It's just very difficult to ex- plain to people that the enemy is somewhere — (like) a big Soviet Union. "(The U.S.) has a war sometime in Nicaragua, in Viet Nam, you never had war in America. The Israeli idea — the Army, this is the bar- rier, this is the distinguish between death and life. Without the army I couldn't now speak with you. You can see it in the Israeli society. The officer in the army gets a very high prestige, because the Israelis understand, without the army, we won't exist. So it was very difficult to explain it to the Ameri- cans."
