lb defuse some of the con-
cern about divorce, Ibbin
noted that "at any given time,
very few Jewish women are
divorced." While Jews'
divorce rate is high - approx-
imately 50 percent of all
Jewish marriages end in
divorce — so is the rate of
remarriage. Statistics in-
dicate that virtually all
Jewish women who get
divorced also remarry.
Intermarriage rates have
increased to the point that
Jewish women now are as
likely as Jewish men to marry
a non-Jew. But as intermar-
riage has increased, conver-
sion to Judaism by the non-
Jewish mate has decreased.
Adding to the problem is

marrying a non-Jew often
know little about Judaism.
Zbbin noted that 40 percent of
Jewish women ages 25 to 40
have had no Jewish educa-
tion.
They also have fewer
Jewish friends than their
mothers do. Eighty to 100
percent of Jewish women
ages 45 and above say their
three best friends are Jews.
Of young women, however, 30
percent say none or one of
their three best friends are
Jews.
This marginality from Jew-
ish life, said ibbin, has led to
more involvement by Jewish
women in the non-Jewish
world and less in the Jewish
community. Volunteerism has
become "a real crisis in
Jewish life," he said. Sixty-
five to 80 percent of today's
Jewish women do not volun-
teer for Jewish organizations.
That is something the
Jewish community will have
to address as the year 2000
approaches, rIbbin said.
Thanks to all the changes
that have occurred, Ibbin
said, "there is no stereotype
of the Jewish woman of the
1980s."
