We may lose the war against mixed- marriage. But we will surely win the war against Jewish /Jewish interdenominational marriage. Our children are be- ing estranged from each other." Which is why, he said, it is imperative that Jews begin to deal with their trauma now. And the way to do that, he said, is not by trying to escape from the world but by embracing the world. "We cannot say to hell with the world or we, destroy the basic meaning of Judaism. Being Jewish is to be wedded to the world. To be Jewish is to know that God lives in the world, even with its perver- sion and cruelty and corrup- tion. lb live in the world is our mandate, our destiny." And the way to do that is to become part of the world again. And a good way to start doing that, he said, is by recognizing and learning more about the righteous gentiles who saved Jews dur- ing the Holocaust. "Are our children not deserving to hear something good of the world? Why should they only know the curse of our predators, not the blessing of our rescuers. By knowing, we can shed a heal- ing light that will allow Jews to believe again, function again, hope again, trust again, attempt again." Schulweis said it is "a scan- dal that Jews know so little about the righteous Chris- tians who saved our lives. We must have a Simon Wiesen- thal to search out those who risked their lives to save our people. It will show us that something was done, that someone protected us, that there were some people who acted with decency in hell. We must remember both the evil and the good." Doing so, Schulweis said, will have a "regenerative power, healing the cynicism of the post-Holocaust universe, _ helping us to form a stronger psyche and turn a new page in our history. "It will help us master our understandable anger. And that's imperative because you build no bridges with anger, only disrespect for the other side." That that is the way to go, said Schulweis, can be seen by a very good example. The example set by God in his prayers. "Yes, the sages tell us that God also prays. What does he pray? 'May it be My will, that My mercy prevails over My anger.' God can't govern the world without mastering His anger. And we can't build the world without compassion for others and ourselves. "So let each of us pray God's prayer. May it be our will that our mercy can prevail over our anger." Anti-Semitism: "Uncertain Times" he good news about anti- Semitism in the U.S. is that there is less than before, said Irwin Suall. The bad news is that there is still too much. Saull, fact-finding director of the Anti-Defamation League, told a session on "Anti-Semitism in America: On the Rise or In Decline" that is reliable information about three phenomena that give a good indication of the level of anti-Semitism in the United States. The first is the U.S. public's attitude towards Jews. Com- parison of major studies in 1964 and 1981 indicate that attitudes are improving, said Suall. In 1964, 37 percent of non- Jews could be considered anti-Semitic. In 1981, that dropped to 23 percent. In both 1964 and 1981, 32 per- cent of non-Jewish Ameri- cans were considered neither anti-Semitic nor favorable to Jews. In 1964, 31 percent had favorable attitudes towards 32 Friday, November 28, 1986 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Jews. By 1981, that increased to 45 percent. "The level of anti-Semitism is still a serious problem but things are moving in the right direction," said Suall. Another area that gives an indication of anti-Semitism, said Suall, is attacks against Jews or Jewish institutions, such as synagogues or ceme- teries. These have decreased from a high of 974 attacks in 1981 to 638 in 1985. The third area is organized anti-Semitic hate groups. Suall said there has also been a downward trend in the number of their members and sympathizers. The Ku Klux Klan, for instance, had be- tween three and five million members in 1920. That dropped to 60,000 in 1967, to 13,000 in 1981, and to 6,500 today. This trend, said Suall-; is true of all other hate groups. Suall also noted that anti- Semitic groups have had lit=\ tle success in exploiting the , Continued on Page 34
