The Christian side • carries moral scars and moral afflictions that are not found on the Jewish side. It follows that the Jewish-Christian dialogue and relationship will ex- hibit both sameness of motivation and difference of motivation. For Jews, among the major questions are: What can we, as Jews and as Americans, con- tribute to human under- standing and wellbeing, including the wellbeing of the Christian community and of our • country? But also, what are we obliged to do to secure and main- tain our own rightful interests and integrity along with other religious and ethnic minorities? For Christians, among the major questions are: What can we, as Christians and as Americans, con- tribute to human under- standing and wellbeing, including the wellbeing of the Jewish community and of our country? But also, what are we required to do to atone for and to over- come our woeful Christian heritage of antisemitism and anti-Judaism? To bring together the exposition thus far: The identity of Jews in America involves three basic elements: peopleness (a Laos) a faith within that peopleness, yet a faith that is not an absolute condi- tion of Jewishness; and Americanness. The entire Eckardt ap- proach demands serious ap- plication to the ecumenical theme if ecumenism is to pro- sper. An important footnote in the Eckardt volume refers to a famous friend of the Jewish people whose studies of the effects of religious bigotries and condemnations of race hatred, especially of Jews, remain inerasable. Eckardt makes this reference to the late James Parkes in his footnote: The late James Parkes used to refer to the spel- ling "anti-Semitism" as "pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo." There is no such thing as a campaign against "Semitism." Since "anti-semitism" is not a scientific word, it deserves neither a capital nor a hyphen. "Antisemitism" is possessed of a single and singular meaning: enmity to Jews as Jews (Juden- feindschaft). There is much to be learned from the comments on secularism and the famous Christian's ecumenism. Per- haps the utilization of the Parkes spelling suggestion will even encourage his way of referring to antisemitism. The Lamm and Eckardt ideas become ideals and both enrich the studies conducted to secularism and ecumenism. Jacob Kavadloff, author of the report titled, "The Jewish -Invasion, A Case History of Anti-Semitic Propaganda in Argentina," states that the Argentine media have dis- seminated many "bizarre falsehoods" about alleged in- ternational Jewish conspir- acies against Argentina. Kovadloff, who is director of South American Affairs of AJC's International Rela- tions Department, cited a re- cent example involving a sup- posed "Jewish plot" to col- onize Patagonia, Argentina's sparsly populated southern region. He chronicles the following events: Last January and again in March, a major Argentine news agency distributed a story saying that disguised Israeli explorers were survey- ing a region of Patagonia for the settlement of 10,000 Israeli and 30,000 Soviet Jews over the next 10 years. The story alleged that this project was approved by the national and local govern- ments. Several influential papers, some well-known vehicles for right wing anti-Semitic pro- paganda, publicized the story, using headlines such as "Pat- agonia—the New Palestine." Representatives of the Delegacion de Asociaciones Israelitas de la Argentina (DAIA), the umbrella organi- zation of Argentina's Jewish community, were unable to uncover any information regarding the source or the validity of the original report. The Patagonia controversy was not new, the AJC report pointed out. It dated back to 1939, when it was believed Nazi Germany planned to detach Patagonia from Ar- gentina as a site for future colonization. This idea was revived in 1971 by Walter Beveraggi Allende.
