Goldfarb
Recuperates
From Surgery

New York (JTA) — Olga
Goldfarb, daughter of the
Soviet emigre David Gold-
farb, arrived in New York last
week for a visit with her
father, who is recuperating
here from lung cancer
surgery. She was granted a
temporary visa by Soviet
emigration authorities, a
move considered unusual for
a refusenik whose application
to permanently emigrate
from the Soviet Union was
concurrently pending.
David Goldfarb's seven-
year ordeal as a refusenik was
abruptly terminated October
16 when industrialist Ar-
mand Hammer flew him and
his wife Cecilia to the United
States aboard his private jet.
The 67-year-old retired gene-
ticist was a patient in a
Moscow hospital, suffering
from complications of dia-
betes and heart disease.
Upon his arrival in New
York, he was immediately ad-
mitted to Columbia-Presby-
terian Medical Center where
tests revealed lung cancer. He
was then scheduled for
surgery, and Columbia-
Presbyterian was asked to
provide that information to
the Soviets.
Olga then applied for per-
mission for a temporary
tourist visa to visit her father
in the hospital, and was told
on to report to the OVIR
emigration office to pick up
her passport, which contain-
ed a visa. The 34-year-old
pediatrician was given per-
mission only for herself and
was refused permission to
bring along her older
daughter, as she had re-
quested.

West Germany
Expands
Presence In
Saudi Arabia

Bonn (JTA) — West Ger-
many is expanding its
military cooperation with
Saudi Arabia by appointing a
Military Attache at its Em-
bassy in Riyadh where no
such post previously existed.
It is also sending a counter-
terrorist expert to the Saudi
capital; and the scheduled
departure for Riyadh last
Sunday of Franz-Josef
Strauss, leader of Bavaria's
conservative Christian Social
Union (CSU) is widely inter-
preted here as a new West
German bid to sell arms to
Saudi Arabia.
Sources here said govern-
ment policy with respect to
arms sales to the Saudis has
not changed since Bonn of-
fered them highly sophisti-
cated weapons several years
ago. Excluded "for the time
being" was the advanced

Leopard-2 tank, which is
manufactured in Bavaria.
The Saudis took offense
and refused to buy any arms
from West Germany unless
restrictions on certain
weapons were removed.
Strauss has strongly sup-
ported arms sales to Saudi
Arabia. He is a member of the
boards of several Bavarian-
based companies which have
offered weapons systems to
that country. His party is
closely linked with the ruling
Christian Democratic Union
(CDU) of Chancellor Helmut
Kohl.
The announcement in Bonn
that Ulrich Wagener, chief of
a special anti-terrorist
brigade, will go to Riyadh to
form a parallel unit there,
could be particularly trouble-
some for Israel. Wegener
received his anti-terrorist
training with elite Israel
Defense Force units. He was
treated as an insider and had
access to highly sensitive in-
formation on counterterrorist
measures.
The Bonn government has
given him a two year leave of
absence. He will be on the
Saudi payroll and is taking

with him some of the most ex-
perienced anti-terrorist ex-
perts in the-country.

ADL Receives
LaRouche Check

The Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith has
received a check for $1,178.86
from Lyndon LaRouche — a
court-ordered payment to
cover out-of-pocket expenses
incurred by ADL during the
political extremist's failed
libel suit against the agency,
the ADL recently announced.
The order to pay came from
the Virginia District Court,
which rejected LaRouche's
claim that he was defamed
when described as an "anti-
Semite" and a "small-time
Hitler" by an ADL official on
the NBCTV program "First
Camera" in March 1984.

Four Questioned

Jerusalem (JTA) — Four
Israeli leftists who headed a
delegation that met in
Bucharest recently with
representatives of the Pales-
tine Liberation Organization
were detained by police for
questioning to determine if
they violated a law barring
Israelis from contact with
members of terrorist organ-
izations.
The three-hour interroga-
tion was conducted at the
central district police head-
quarters in Ramla. The four
were released on bail and
were not summoned for
further questioning.
