NEWS Violence In Jerusalem Flares After Murder LEAPIN' LIZARDS We almost forgot to subscribe to the Jewish News, Mom! A medic treats Eliyahu Amedi after he was stabbed in the Moslem quarter of Jerusalem's Old City. Amedi's murder set off a wave of violence in the capital. Jerusalem (JTA) — David Kraus, Chief of Israel's na- tional police, told the Cabinet last Sunday that caches of il- legal arms have been found in the possession of Jews in the Old City. He said they in- cluded grenades and light weapons. But he did not believe they signified the ex- istence of an antiArab Jewish underground such as was ex- posed in the West Bank two years ago. Kraus provided the in- telligence information to the ministers after a week of anti- Arab violence and harass- ment by Jews that followed the fatal stabbing on November 15 of Eliahu Am- di, a 22-year old student at the Shuvu Banim yeshiva in the Moslem quarter of the Old City. Amdi was murdered near the yeshiva. Three Arab youths suspected of the crime are in custody. Kraus said that unless calm is restored to Jerusalem, massive military reinforce- ments would have to be called in to keep the peace. He said the police preferred not to ask the army for help, but it could not allow itself to be over- whelmed by rioters. Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir called on "all sectors of the Jerusalem populace" to preserve order and peace in Jerusalem and avoid public disturbances. Just hours after Kraus ap- peared before the Cabinet, a Molotov cocktail was thrown in an Old City street. A memorial service for Amdi, marking the end of the seven- day mourning period, took the form of a procession from the Shmuel Hanavi neighbor- hood in West Jerusalem, where the murder victim had lived, to the site in the Old Ci- ty Moslem quarter where he was killed. At the murder site, Rabbi Moshe Levinger, leader of the Gush Emunim in Hebron and other rabbis harrangued the crowd. They blamed the government and the Jeru- salem municipality for Am- di's death. But the police were out in force and no serious violence developed. In another development, the leader of three terrorists arrested for the murder was one of more than a thousand security prisoners released from Israeli jails in a 1985 ex- change for three soldiers held by terrorists in Lebanon, Haaretz reported. He recent- ly completed another prison term. He has not been identified by name but his terrorist con- nection is with the Syrian- backed Abu Moussa gang of El Fatah dissidents opposed to Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasir Arafat, according to reports. The pro-Arafat "Force 17" of El Fatah claimed responsibili- ty for the stabbing but Israeli authorities say the killers were operating for George Habash's Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, based in Damascus.
