She said she chose to go
into business for herself be-
cause she always worked for
others and wanted to have
her own name on her com-
pany. In addition, many
people already knew of her
expertise in the field, and she
wanted to "capitalize" on it.

pressure on singles to be
couples. In order for singles
to achieve this end, Lapides
recommends activities for
singles who have like inter-
ests.
"Get people together with a
common ground. They'll grow
to like each other." Among
the types of activities she
suggests are retreats, volun-
teer projects, games nights
and discussion groups. Some-
times dances and singles
bars, where singles tend to
judge each other on appear-
ance, are less than conducive
to providing a comfortable
atmosphere in which to meet.
"When (activities are) based
on a physical situation of ac-
ceptance or rejection it makes
everybody feel uncomfortable.
It's very unnatural."
To meet new people,
Lapides encourages singles to
participate in activities they
like. "When you do things
you like, you can't help but
meet people you like."
Lapides makes new friends
by going to events and par-
ties where she exchanges
business cards with other
guests. She rarely refuses an
invitation. And when she
goes to a party, she makes no
bones about going up to a
stranger to introduce herself
and start a conversation.
"When you're genuinely in-
terested in people, they pick
up on it and they want to be
with you."
For Lapides, single life has
been a breeze. "I've made the
most of it. I've enjoyed the
freedom to be able to know
that when I went out or I
went out to a party that I
was free and clear to see
whatever happened or to flirt
or be flirted with. I love that
freedom."
And when meeting Mr. or
Ms. Right, she offers some
practical advice. "Think
friend. Don't think romance
at first. Through friendship
true romance can develop." E]
