Rather than practicing public rela- tions, she should have gone into counseling for singles, and if not counseling, then as an advocate for single living. "I think there's no shame of being single at any age. I think you have to be proud of who you are. If you are single, enjoy your freedom. Know that every day you have the freedom to make new friends. There's so much you can learn from everyone." Lapides, 30, of Birmingham, said singles should not let themselves be intimidated by persons who pressure them into getting married. "If someone pressures you about being single and tries to make you feel inadequate, realize it's their own insecu- rity." Lapides adds: "there's always time to be connected and to be committed to one person." To avoid this pressure to get married, Lapides followed a plan which allows her to Lisa Lapides enjoy her singlehood. "I kept looking for fun no matter how I create it, whether it was being with children or being with my girlfriends or being with my guy friends or having a party in my home. I created the fun instead of try- ing to look for the fun and I took the pressure off myself. I think you've got to take the pressure off and be secure in yourself and keep looking for the fun and keep looking for your own self-enhancement." In her spare time, Lapides looks for self-enhancement through a variety of activi- ties: going to events, parties, talking on the phone to friends, being with family and friends, reading and playing tennis. A native of Pontiac, Lapides attended Birming- ham schools and Kingswood. She spent her freshman year at the University of Tampa (Fla.) and earned a B.S. de- gree in communications and public relations at Boston University. She studied briefly for an M.S.W. degree, but decided that social work was not her thing. "I need too much immediate gratification in my work and I'm too up and I need up work. I felt it (social work) was too drain- ing for me." Since graduation from col- lege, she worked as an assis- tant to Roone Arledge, president of ABC News/ Sports in New York for three years, but came back home to be with her family. Back in Detroit, she worked at the Jewish Community Center organizing activities for sing- les and working on the Jewish Book Fair.
