FIRST SIGNAL LIGHT NORTH OF MAPLE ROAD ON THE RISING SUN SIDE OF THE STREET HEIDI PRESS Local News Editor What God has sent, no one can prevent. — Yiddish Proverb It was bashert (fated, de - stined) for Teresa Miller of Edinborough, Scotland, and Chuck Brooks of Southfield to meet. And The Jewish News helped, indirectly, to arrange it. Brooks, owner of a head- hunting agency, placed a dis- play personal ad in The Jewish News in August 1985, "looking for a nice Jewish lady for (hopefully) a perma- nent relationship." A relative of Miller's, Samuel Raab of Redford Township, saw the ad and suggested that his wife June send it to Miller, her cousin in Scotland, with a wish for good luck. Little did he know what he had wrought. Miller responded to the ad, and to make a long story short, she is now Mrs. Chuck Brooks. Both the Brookses never really expected anything to happen as a result of placing and responding to the ad. Mrs. Brooks had never an- swered a personal ad before. What made her answer this •ad? She said she thought to herself, "What the heck, it's 3,500 miles away." Brooks himself took a dim view. He responsed to her letter think- ing, "I'll never meet this lady anyway." Brooks said he started get- ting the letters from Miller about three weeks after the ad ran. By February 1986, the letters ' started getting serious, according to Brooks. In addition, transatlantic phone bills were piling up on both sides of the ocean. Miller, who owned a resale shop in Edinborough landed in Detroit on April 17. The next day at noon, Brooks proposed. "Our meeting con- firmed what I already knew," that he was going to ask her to marry him, Brooks said. The new Mrs. Brooks said it was her husband's honesty that attracted her to him. Brooks was 'intrigued by her letters. He decided in March that he wanted to meet her. "It got to a point where the intrigue was driving me crazy." He said that when they met there was "instant acceptance." Both are divorced. Brooks has three children from a previous marriage, and they live in California. Mrs. Brooks also has three chil- dren from a prior marriage, one is in medical school in Scotland, and the other two are here with her. Brooks said he chose to run the ads because "anything can be used and should be used to accomplish a goal," including advertising, he re- marked. After having co- founded and directed the Singles 2 organization at the Jewish Community Center but not really meeting any- body, he decided to advertise. "I felt a companion adver- tisement was a very good source. The Jewish News was the Number One spot" in which to place it, he said. Would Brooks recommend that others take advantage of the personals? "No question!" F / Time is Money, Inc. CALL: Getting Personal And Married r ARE YOU HAVING TROUBLE FINDING TIME TO GET THINGS DONE??
