SANDRA MAURER Special to The Jewish News y ou've -seen them. Those trendy little classified ads nestled neatly between flats for rent and employ- ment, with such catchy come-ons as "Companion Connec- tion," "Companion Corner" and "People Connectors" in the daily \_ news or the weekly publications. /- These advertisers are promoted as "attractive, intelligent, professionals looking for serious relationships with same." Under the guise of anonymous box numbers, Jewish singles have joined the ranks of those looking for love among the classifieds. The stigma attached to the idea of advertising for a mate is rapidly diminishing and is quickly becoming the more popular alternative to the singles bar. "The response to the ads is overwhelming" claims Jill Cole, di- rector of the Community Network of Jewish Singles of the Jewish Com- munity Center in West Bloomfield. Last year, the CNJS began including personal ads in its monthly newslet- ter. The People Connector ads in the Jewish Singles Event Source began as an additional means for Jewish singles to meet. For some," Cole continues, "the personal ads are amusing and a fun way to meet one another. For others, it may be a less threatening way to participate in a singles activity." And participate they are. As many as 50 personal ads a week have appeared in The Jewish News since their debut in the Oct. 24 is- sue, and more than 1,000 responses have been forwarded to date. The ratio of men and women placing these ads is relatively equal and most are between the ages of 25 and 55. All are equally hopeful of finding the perfect Jewish mate. Romantic, 43 yrs. professional male, enjoys dancing, hiking, jazz, racquetball, biking and a good lis- tener. Interested in meeting non- smoking female. I invite you to touch my heart, invade my dreams and consume my nights. Like all the persons interviewed for this story, Mark Y. of Southfield prefers to remain anonymous. His promise of romance drew two dozen responses from the Jewish News and the Source. He shares an excerpt of a typical response: Dear Romantic, You have already stirred my fan- tasies and touched my heart with your ad. I accept your invitation to invi ion tat touch your heart. Are you still avail- able? 1) Some of the respondents were rejected just by their letters. Mark spoke to the remainder of the women over the phone. After speaking to a few of them, he politely suggested that they didn't have anything in common. He ended up meeting at least 12 at "safe places for dinner or coffee." He discovered that it isn't al- ways accurate to pre judge a person. "One woman sent a response on the back of a business card. I im- mediately felt that she wasn't put- ting much effort into this, but reluc- tantly decided to meet her anyway. She turned out to be very nice." Misrepresentation is also a con- cern to him. "One letter said that her weight was in proportion to her height. After we had met for dinner, I found out that she had lied." Mark offers this suggestion to persons responding to an ad. "I have found that the more detail given in a letter, the more the curiosity is enhanced. And a good sense of humor is very important in prompt- ing a reply from the person who placed the ad."
