single consumers, unless
their product is exclusively
designed for the singles mar-
ket. "Advertising," he says,
"is targeted more towards
demographics of consumer in-
comes, educations and ages.
Marital status isn't very im-
portant as a differentiator."
Nevertheless, he believes
that the negative feelings
singles have towards adver-
tisements suggest that a
problem exists. "If single
people feel that advertisers
are stereotyping their image,
and if advertisers are offend-
ing a group of buyers they
mean to reach, then some-
thing is wrong. The advertis-
ers have a problem with their
research, or at their creative
end. They aren't doing their
job right."
Larry Imerman, 39, of
Birmingham, offers a very
practical explanation of why
advertisers are so selective in
depicting single people. He
notes that advertisers must,
by nature of their business,
"hold out the positive images
of single life • because they're
trying to sell a product. We're
presented with the image of
reality that they want to por-
tray. If you don't give people
excitement and glamor,
you're going to turn them
off." One obvious result of
this, he says, is that "adver-
tisers don't look at the fact
