losing in on the 50th
anniversary of his
start in broadcasting,
Mel Allen has received
numerous honors. He is a
member of the National
Broadcaster's Hall of Fame,
the International Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame, and, in
1978, Allen was the first
broadcaster inducted into
Baseball's Hall of Fame. He
is in the Jewish Who's Who,
and the International Who's
Who. "All of which, plus a
dollar, gets you through the
first toll gate driving into
New York City," he says with
a laugh.
Allen is the featured
speaker at Monday's Michi-
gan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame dinner, which begins at
6:30 p.m. at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek. The dinner honors
Mery Pregulman, the former
University of Michigan foot-
ball star, Olympic and Wayne
State University fencer
Byron Krieger, and the late
Cincy Sachs, a longtime local
basketball coach.
Allen has watched and
known many great athletes
in his career, including out-
standing Jewish performers,
such as former Tiger great
Hank Greenberg. Allen best
recalls Greenberg's "class, his
dignity. The ability was obvi-
ous. The hard work that he
put into making himself as
outstanding as he was."
Greenberg is also enshrined
in the Baseball Hall of Fame,
as well as the Michigan
Jewish Hall. He played 12
years in Detroit and one in
Pittsburgh. "He was such a
fine team man and leader, all
those qualities, he had.
"When he first broke in, it
was very much like the thing
that happened some years
later to Jackie Robinson
(major league baseball's first
black player), when Jackie
broke in and took a lot of guff

from the dugout about his
ethnic background. But Hank
learned to take it and give it.
By his deeds, he shut 'em
up."
Hank Danning was the
Giant's catcher when Allen
broke into radio with CBS in
New York in 1937: Danning,
who was Jewish, played for
10 years, 1933-42, hitting
.285 in 890 games, and bat-
ted over .300 for three con-
secutive seasons. "He was an
outstanding ballplayer," said
Allen, adding, "He didn't run
into much of the bench-
jockeying from an ethnic
background that Hank
(Greenberg) did. I'm sure he

Mel Allen will
reminisce about
many sports
memories at the

Michigan Jewish
Sports Hall of
Fame dinner on
Monday.

got some of it. Times had
slowly begun to change about
then. I think playing in New
York made a difference, too.
Because you had more Jewish
people coming to games."
By the time Sandy Koufax
began pitching, with the
Brooklyn Dodgers in 1955,
few cared about an athlete's
religious or ethnic back-
ground, especially a great
athlete. "He was a super
star," Allen said of the Hall-
of-Famer who won 165 games
against only 87 losses in 12
Dodger seasons. "They didn't
think about him in that way,
in a sense of getting on him
from the stands or from the
dugout. Usually, that's the
case - if you're outstanding,
you make people forget what
your religion is, or what your
background is, from a nega-
tive standpoint. They may
think about it from the posit-
ive standpoint as a product,
which is an interesting thing
