GINOPOLIS' A FAMILY

restaurant now? ... We must
be kidding ... But honest,
folks, it's true ... The one-
time singles bar ... and
voted among America's top
ones by Playboy Magazine,
has reversed its field com-
pletely ... to concentrate on
food as a main emphasis .. .
Drinking and dancing are
very secondary ... In fact,
there may not even be any
dancing after first of the year
... The floor will be used for
booth seating.
It now has open hearth
cooking ... and the new
lighted outside sign reads
"Ginopolis' On The Grill."
There are about 12 fresh
fish items served daily ...
and a card menu of 38 types
showing those available also
explain how they can be ob-
tained ... chargrilled, blac-
kened, fried, baked, poached,
broiled or sauteed . . . Also
obtainable when in season
are six seafood appetizers ...
stone crab claws, steamed
clams, cherry stone clams on
half shell, steamed mussels,
oysters on half shell and oys-
ters Rockefeller.
Ginopolis' On The Grill has
seven salads, fresh pasta dis-
hes, steaks, chicken, chops,
ribs ... and even a children's
menu.
When entering now, there
is etched glass instead of se-
eing the long bar ... High
tables will be replaced with
regular tables to make it look
more like a dining lounge
area.
It is still one of the most
handsome restaurants in this
locale ... with beautiful oak
all around, etched glass and
brass moldings. Detroit Ti-
gers and Pistons jerseys in
frames, pictures of the
famous with Johnny and
Peter Ginopolis, full padded
booths, high ones and regular
velvet padded booths in other
areas ... The 225 seating
capacity also includes tables.
In 1932, a small building
known as Country Itin stood
on the site ... In 1948, it was
Fred's Bar ... Then 1978 the
building became Ginopolis',
owned by George Ginopolis
and sons Johnny and Peter.
The present large and
beautiful restaurant came
along in 1982 ... a highly-
respected memory that would
have made George mighty
proud of his boys.
From a 64-seater, it was

transformed into one well
over 225 ... plus a private
meeting and banquet area ...
costing above the $1 million
mark.
There's also an open hearth
now ... for cooking and
chargrilling ... plus a
steamer ... located in the far
corner of the Vegas sector
where one huge booth was
removed.
The family dining concept
is a good one ... something
Johnny and Peter have
wanted for a long time
Singles or bar recognition is
okay, but the emphasis on
food is a dream come true.
Who would have thought
that Oba's Grainery 'standing
there in the '20s ... or the
little Ginopolis' that served
terrific ground rounds (it still
does) and chili ... and be-
came one of America's most
noted singles bars ... would
today be known as a family
restaurant?
The all-new colorful menu
for lunch and dinner is com-
plete for family-style dining.
IT'S TRUE . . . that Di-
mitri's of Southfield will have
dancing after the first of the
year.
It's also true ... that the
big Dimitri's Sunday Brunch
may return.
THE EVENT is expected
to be the finest and most
glamorous fashion show
production presented in this
area ... produced, directed
and coordinated by Leah
Marks ... Nov. 29 ... at Or-
chestra Hall on Woodward.
The benefit for Orchestra
Hall will honor Frank Stella,
one of the locale's top restau-
rant equipment suppliers ...
philanthropist ... and
presidential confidant.
Title of the show wil be
"Viva L'Italia" ... with Ita-
lian American Cultural
Society presenting culinary
delights at 6 p.m. ... by
Caucus Club, C.A. Muer
Corp., 1940 Chophouse, E.J.
Nicks, Excalibur, Hotel
Pontchartrain, Jacques,
Jeremiah's Cheesecake, Joe
Muer's, Kingsley Inn,
Mario's, Midtown Cafe,
Panache, Pastissima's,
Penna, Red Devil, Roma Cafe
and Virrce's ... plus liquor
and wines from R.M. Gilli-
gan.
Italian fashions narrated
by John Finck will be at 8
p.m. ... with John Darakjian

Naomi's, Bricker-Tunis Furs,
D.O.C. Optics, etc.
This is not expected to be
the ordinary type of fashion
show ... Leah Marks' ever-
working brain will produce
an elegant extravaganza ...
with any tuxedoes and long
gowns being worn among an
audience that may hit the
1,000 mark.
The musical fashion show
production by Leah Marks,
Italian Cultural Society and
Orchestra Hall, has been in
the works for some time now.
A press and luminary "kic-
koff." luncheon was held re-
cently at Excalibur Restau-
rant on Franklin and North-
western Hwy ... attended by
Frank Stella, Eleanor Breit-
meyer, John Bloom, co-
chairperson: Anthony
Fioritto, Italian Cultural
Society; attorney Steve Bock
of Liberson and Bock: Mar-
garet Hanna, John Darak-
jian, Tamara Friedman,
Harold Gray, Harry Kosins,
Naomi Lippa, Bob Gillin-
gham (supplying all the
liquor and wines); Lorraine
Schultz, president of the De-
troit Fashion Group; Jeff
Montgomery, Jo Monaghan,
Shirlee Iden, Sybil Little, and
more.
Following luncheon was
"shooting" of models wearing
designer garments from those
merchants in the Nov. 29
show ... with the models pos-
ing by Pat Archer's Excalibur
automobile.
- Proceeds of the benefit
fashion spectacular by Leah
Marks will be for renovation
of Orchestra Hall, which has
been a showplace landmark
in Detroit for many years .
and still well-remembered for
its beauty and accoustical
quality by leading musical
artists the world over.
Tickets are $50 per person
... and can be obtained by
calling Orchestra Hall, 833-
3700 ... Special patron
boxes, seating four, are
available at $600 each.
The affair is tax-deductable
as much as the law will allow
... and valet parking has
been arranged for.
Lou Miles, designer of
men's clothing, is expected to
appear ... and the award to
Frank Stella will be given by
David De Chiera, executive
director of Michigan Opera
Theatre.
MAIL DEPT. . . . letter
sent to Mr. & Mrs. William
Campbell, owners of
Elizabeth's Restaurant in
Northville ... "I read a de-
rogatory report about your
reservation policy in The
Jewish News (Oct. 31) writ-
ten by Danny Raskin. I sent
a copy of this letter to The
Jewish News and requested
that they print it. I made a
reservation for a party of six

asked that I send a non-

which I did. I felt this was
