life, make this commitment.
"I also wanted to know the
practical aspects of how do
you work a radio, or what the
codes were like in those days,
and how you crossed the bor-
ders, even details like how
you changed passports."
Being a woman in espion-
age for Israel was an accept-
able career in the early days.
Courter says women in the
Palmach did more aggressive
things then, and were foot
soldiers in the line of battle,
but as the armed forces be-
came more established,
women still serve, but they
are found in more menial
positions. "I've been in-
formed," she claims, "there
are less women being used
now in intelligence work. It's
a controversial issue."
According to Courter,
women are well suited to es-
pionage. They are not as sus-
pect — they don't fit the pro-
files.
Courter describes it as
periods of tedium punctuated
by some tense moments.
Women apparently had less
nervous breakdowns than
their male counterparts, and
sometimes were used to get
the men out of the country in
which they were working
undercover so a mission
would not be jeopardized.
Another reason Courter
gave for women making suc-
cessful spies is that at the
end of their days as an opera-
tive, a gap on a woman's re-
sume causes little question —
it could have been time taken
off for having children.
Can Israel, or any other
country, survive without in-
telligence agencies, like the
Mossad? Courter says intelli-
gence is basically the preven-
tion of problems. "It is de-
veloping information systems
to warn you when various ac-
tions that may be hostile to
you might happen. A lot of
the work involved is fairly
simple, but it has to be done
. It's all of the simple
things. Things like what's
happening in the press,
movements of the people in
surrounding countries, how
their currencies are fluctuat-
ing against the dollar."
Commenting on how one
becomes a spy, she notes,
"One never applies for the
job; you are recruited."
Code Ezra is Courter's
third novel, the previous two
being The Midwife and River
of Dreams.

In the bar mitzvah an-
nouncement for Jeffrey
Selik appearing in last
week's Jewish News, it
should have said that he is
the son of Bruce Selik and
