Remembering
Nobel Laureates
Reading ("Purely Com-
mentary," Nov. 7) on Jewish
Nobel Laureates, I recalled
(and checked to verify) that I
had the privilege to bring
some of them as major speak-
ers for the "Junior Science
and Humanities Symposium,"
which I coordinated for
Wayne State University for
18 years.
Among them were: Dr.
Isidor I. Rabi, 1971; Prof.
Melvin Calvin, 1979; Dr.
Herbert Simon, 1981; Dr.
Herbert C. Brown, 1984; and
Dr. Rosalyn S. Yallow, 1986

Has Long History
My eye caught the news
item of the two new "sisters,"
namely, Detroit's Sinai Hos-
pital and Israel's Assaf-
Harofeh Hospital. It was in
British ruled Palestine that
Sarafend was known as the
.largest, most jmportant corn-
' pound ,of ,military . bases in-
, eluding the Sarafend military
- hospital, later . to- become the

hospital. My father, who was
an expert tinsmith, was re-
cruited by the British gov-
ernment to work in one of
these bases.
Years later as an 18 years
old, I spent an unforgettable
summer in Bahad 12, the
famous girls' training base
for the army. The training
base was practically over the
fence from Assaf-Harofeh
when, only a few years later,
I lived with my husband,
Shelly, in our first apartment
at the hospital's doctors'
quarters and where our first
son, Gilad, was born at the
end of his father's internship
in this fine hospital.

Those of us who crowded

Schools auditorium found

information about this great
American Jewish poetess of
the 19th century. The histori-

of Lazarus' brillant poetry,
intertwined with songs of the
