rial by the time I was seven,
so I told my mother I was
half-way through my auto-
biography!'
During those years of
travelling to exotic countries,
the family maintained a
home in suburban New York
where they would retreat
when not away.
It was out of her teenage
years that the fascination for
intelligence work and espion-
age developed, and the reason
for the later writing of Code
Ezra. Courter, with an active
imagination, observed her
father greeting a stranger as
he alighted from a train at
the station one evening.
The stranger called her
father by a name that wasn't
his own, and her father called
him by a name that later she
learned was not the
stranger's. The man, Raffee,
and his family were to be-
come an important part of
the young girl's life.
As an only child — a sister
was born when she was al-
ready 14 — young Courter
became involved in Raffee's
noisy, active household,
where interesting people
were always coming and go-
ing, and Raffee himself was a
puzzle. She could never figure
out what Raffee did, and fan-
tasized he was a spy. As an
adult she found out that her
hunch was correct. He was
with the Mossad, Israel's in-
telligence agency.
With Raffee's help, Code
Ezra, was researched and
written. The book is a spy
thriller, and revolves around
a small core of Mossad
women operatives and their
leader.
Although the book is fic-
tion, Courter has managed to
give it a definite flavor of
truth. Her research is
thorough, even to the point of
learning how to fly so that
her portrayal of a mission in-
volving stealing an enemy
plane seems real.
Getting material for the
book was not an easy task,
according to Courter. Fortu-
nately, Raffee was an excel-
lent entree into the living
rooms of many Israeli homes,
and as Courter commented,
"People were very gracious.
They kept serving tea and
poppyseed cake, and as long
as I kept eating, they kept
talking. I gained some
weight, but I also got a lot of
information. They were very
generous in talking to me
about their past lives work-
ing for the State of Israel in
espionage.
"Why would they talk to
me, tell me those secrets?
Well, besides Raffee vouching
for me, I told them very
frankly I was writing fiction
and I wasn't interested in the
truth. I wasn't a journalist.
In fact I didn't want exact de-
tails like dates and names —
I wanted to know emotionally
what it was like to live this
