Iranian Jews
Flee Increased
Persecution

New York (JTA) — Hun-
dreds of Jews are fleeing Iran
as a result of intensified
persecution of Jews in that
country, according to a report
from Vienna, where many of
the Iranian Jews arrived, in
last Monday's New York
Times.
Refugees officials in Vienria

Inflation Figures

Tel Aviv (JTA) — October's
inflation rate was 2.4 per-
cent, the Central Bureau of
Statistics reported. That was
the lowest October rate in 13
years, noted Finance Minister
Moshe Nissim, who cautioned
that it was no indication of
an upward trend. He said Oc-
tober traditionally is an "ex-
pensive" month because of
seasonal increases in the
prices of produce, clothing
and footwear.
Histadrut labor federation
Secretary General Yisrael
Kessar noted that the Oc-
tober increase was lower than
had been feared, but still was
relatively high. For the first
10, months of 1936, prices
rose by 14.6 percent.

that at any time 500 Jews
were being detained in Iran,
many accused of being Zion-
ists. Others, they said , have
been arrested for purposes of
extortion," the Times wrote.
In the last several months,
at least 800 Iranian Jews
have arrived in Israel. Israeli
officials estimate that 40,000
to 50,000 Jews remain in Iran,
while Iranian refugees put the
number at 15,000 to 25,000.
Many thousands Jews want
to leave Iran but are unable to
do so, because it is extremely
difficult to obtain a passport
"particularly since a special
passport office for non-
Moslems was transferred
from th Prime Minister's of-
fice to the prosecutor's office,"
the Times noted, adding,
"Most of the recent arrivals
in Vienna left Iran without
legal travel documents."
The Jews who fled Iran said
that Islamic committees in
Iran have seized control of
Jewish schools and abolished
the teaching of Hebrew. The
Islamic committees have also
"violently tried to force
young Jews to convert to
Islam, confiscated Jewish
property, banished Jews from
official positions and routine-
ly arrested, beat and tortured
Jews and used repeated fail-
ings to extort money from
them," the Times wrote.
