War Criminal Dies In Poland Paris (JTA) — Erich Koch, one of the oldest surviving Nazi war criminals, died in Barczewo Prison in Poland on last week at the age of 90, the Polish Press Agency reported. He was convicted in Warsaw in 1958-59 of having partici- pated in the killing or depor- tation of more than 300,000 Poles, most of them Jewish, during World War II. Koch spent the last 27 years at Barczewo, the prison he administered when he served as Governor of East Prussia, which was part of Germany until the end of the war. He was also named Reich Commissioner for the Ukraine and drew personal praise from Hitler. Koch evaded capture at the end of the war, but was ar- rested in the British zone of occupied Germany in 1949 and extradited to Poland a year later. He escaped the death penalty because of a Polish law barring execution of people in ill health.
