Officer Seeks Challenges
For Women Soldiers

DAVID HOLZEL

Staff Writer

G

en. Amira Dotan's
feminism consists of
a belief in "equality,"
that is, equal opportunity for
women and "identity," the
right to act and be treated as
a women.
As the head of the

Women's Corps of the Israel
Defense Forces, Gen. Dotan
the first woman to attain
that rank, is in the key posi-
tion to take "very talented
and well educated" 18-year-
old Israeli women and give
\ them "challenges." Gen.
/- Dotan views a woman's two-
year compulsory service as an
important "stage of becoming
a grown-up citizen" and as a
way of attaining the skills ad
the self-esteem necessary for
success in a male-dominated
\ society.
/ -
Speaking on Nov. 16 to a
parlor meeting of the Detroit
Young Zionists, a chapter of
the Zionist Organization of
America's Metro Detroit Dis-
trict, Dotan, 39, explained
that women soldiers in Israel
serve in all IDF units, includ-
ing front-line units. They are
' involved in intelligence work,
they man alarm systems and-
are combat instructors. The
only thing women soldiers do
not do is engage in combat,
she said.
Sixty-seven percent of Is-
raeli women are recruited
into the IDF. Of these, ten
percent go into career army
service. Women who do not
serve decline for religious -
reasons. They perform two
years of national service in
- hospitals or as teachers in
place of their military obliga-
tions, Gen. Dotan said.
Asked why women aren't
allowed to fight in the IDF,
she cited the attitudes toward
women held by Israel's
enemies and prevailing atti-
tudes in Israeli society. By
way of example, she ex-
plained how the kidnapping
and murder two years ago of
woman soldier Hadass Kedmi
"generated panic" in the
country. How much worse it
would be if Israeli women
were taken as prisioners of
war, Gen. Dotan seemed to
imply.

She declared that there
- would be "no revolution" in
the status of women in Israel,
"no nissim (miracles), just
step by step changes."
Gen. Dotan earned a de-
.,--•gree in psychology at Ben-
Gurion University in Be'ev
Sheva. Married, and a
mother of three children, she
said that, like many career
women, she finds herself in a
"clash of two worlds," of tra-
dition and family on one
-- hand, and her career on the
the other.
\/= Gen. Dotan came to the
U.S. to attend_ the Council of :
Jewish -Federations', 'General • _-
Assembly,. she will spend_ an
additional week , speaking , to'

audiences around the coun-
try.
She called for a basic
reorientation in relations be-
tween American Jews and Is-
rael.
"I want to say openly and
loudly that I hate charity,"
she told the Detroit Young
Zionists group. "It's about
time to invest money (in Is-
rael), to reinforce the Negev
for high tech industries, to
come once a year. To come on
aliyah is most welcome.
"I think we are part of one
people," she went on to say.
"But I don't want charity. I
don't want anyone to give out
of rachmones (mercy)."
After speaking of Israel's
desire for peace, Gen. Dotan
was asked, in jest, what
would she do if there was
peace? She replied amiably
that she didn't fear for her
job as she is nearing retire-
ment age.

`Friends' Stress
Local Progress

Staff Report

If American Arabic and
Jewish Friends are successful
-at the - group's upcoming
scholarship dinner, the guest
for Jewish-Arab amity will
gain just a little more
ground.
According to Co-chairman
Arnold Michlin, the dinner —
to be held 7 p.m. Dec. 4, at
the Ramada Inn in Southfield
— should raise between
$5,000 and $8,000. Michlin
expects 250 people to attend
the event, which will feature
Wayne State University
President Dr. David
Adamany as speaker.
American Arabic and
Jewish Friends hopes to "es-
tablish a presence" at WSU.
And while the group's schol-
arship has been "temporarily
shelved," according to
Michlin, funds raised at the
dinner will be used to bring
"three high caliber speakers"
to the campus in order "to
promote understanding of the
Judaic and Arabic civiliza-
tions." Lectures and seminars
will touch more people than a
scholarship would, Michlin
explained.
Lecturers will be chosen by
WSU's School of Near East-
ern and Asian Studies, he
said.
American Arabic and
Jewish Friends, welcomes
"moderates" from both sides
to the group's functions,
Michlin explained. Recogni-
tion of the existence of the
State of Israel is a prerequis-
ite. The focus of the group is
local, not international, how-
ever.
"We're trying to make
peace (between Jews and
Arabs) in southeast Michi-
gan," he"Ampha.§ized. "We
have • no illusion =about' mak- -
ing peace 'in the Middle
East." I I. -
