singles of Jerusalem are

educated, highly opinion-
ated — and highly hard to
live with.
The "mate chase" means
bouncing off a lot of com-
plicated people before finally
settling on the most perfect,
or least irritating, choice
available. Strangely enough,

from you than if he were born
an Eskimo. After the third
such calamity, most people
refuse shiduchs but some do
continue with the shidduch
tradition in special cases. As
Lenny, originally from West-
bury, N.Y., says, "The first
thing I ask is, 'Who's the
favor for?' If it's for me, I'll
give it some thought before
refusing."
A uniquely 'foolhardy way
to find a mate is through the
personal column of the
English-language paper
Jerusalemites are burdened
with, The Jerusalem Post. I
know two people who tried
this route. The first received
89 replies — surely a record
— after an especially moving
advertisement for himself. He
estimates that half were
psychotic and the rest mere-
ly depressed. Another fellow,
Shai, who brilliantly de-
scribed his attributes in a
highly successful and
memorable ad, went on
dozens of dates. After com-
pleting them all, he said,
"Never again will I go out
with someone who would
want to go out with me."
So it's back to the parties,
the lifeline of the singles
scene, easily the most suc-
cessful way to meet other
