"We support the struggle of the Soviet Jews for freedom and for their right to speak out," said Myron Winkelman, a spokesman for the pickets. "We believe that our efforts will help them achieve their goal." The demonstrators pro- tested the Soviet Union's re- fusal to allow thousands of Jews to emigrate against Soviet laws prohibiting the teaching of Hebrew, and the continued, harrassment of those who are denied exit visas. "The biggest problem we face is a public that is not really informed about the hardships Soviet Jews face," said Winkelman, a member of the Soviet Jewry Commit- tee. "We hope to change that." Many of the people attend- ing the performances ac- knowledged the protestors right to picket the dance company, but they said they could not understand what connection the troupe had with the Russian govern- ment. "It's appropriate for them to picket, I see no problem with that," said a man from Grosse Pointe who would not give his name. "But what do the dancers have to do with the Soviet government. I don't particularly believe that culture and politics mix." Winkelman explained that the group was not protesting the dance company, but the Soviet Union's anti-semitic -- policies. "We are not here to protest the dance company," said Winkelman. "In fact, we support the right of cultural exchange between (America and Russia). "What we are here for, though, is to send a message to the Soviet government that what they are doing to the Soviet Jews is wrong and should be changed. The Soviets are sensitive to American public opinion and we know they are hearing what we are saying." Winkelman also hoped the demonstration would send a message to the American government. "We hope that the U.S. will put the treat- ment of Jews in Russia on the agenda in talks with the Soviet Union," he said. The demonstrations were peaceful as activists lined the stairs leading up to Masonic, some carrying signs which read "Let My People Go" and "There can be no peace with- out human rights". More _ signs had names of promi- nent refuseniks who have been harrassed by the Rus- sians. Security was extremely tight for the four weekend performances. Michael Lane, a demon- strator, said he was disap- pointed that only a handful of Jews showed up to protest. He said they should have felt obligated to come out and "fight for thefr brothers' and sisters' rights to live as human beings." '
