relay, Niwirither 14, 1986 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Julia Klein was described
during her active years in the
midcentury as "the lady with
a mine of information about
Michigan Jewry." Her knowl-
edgeable status stemmed
from close association in
many movements with her
father, the late Aaron Klein,
and her surviving brothers,
Maurice and Victor, the lat-
ter now residing in Califor-
nia.
With her father, who was
among the most intimate and
closest associates of Rabbi
A.M. Hershman in Cong.
Shaarey Zedek, she had lead-
ing roles in the planning of
the synagogue's 80th and
subsequent anniversaries.
She also had leading associ-
ate roles in numerous other
congregational affairs.
Upon the founding of The
Detroit Jewish News, she was
the newspaper's society editor
for five years.
Miss Klein, who died Nov.
8, was born in Detroit 86
years ago. She was a book-
keeper for an insurance com-
pany. She was a life member
of Cong. Shaarey Zedek, an
active member of Women's
American ORT and the Fresh
Air Society.
Besides her brothers, she
leaves a niece and nephews.

Journalist
Richard Yaffe
Dies At Age 83

U.S.D.A. CHOICE

CUBED STEAK ....

Julia Klein

New York (JTA) — Richard
Yaffe, a leading Jewish jour-
nalist and Socialist Zionist
who used his skills not only
to record the events of the
present but also the hopes of
the future for the Jewish peo-
ple and for Israel, died last
week. He was 83 years old.
Yaffe did not stand aloof
from the issues and events of
his time. As a writer, lecturer,
editor, political activist and a
founder of Americans for Pro-
gressive Israel which reflected
the views of Mapam, he was
involved in countless causes
and campaigns for human
rights and dignity every-
where.
As a foreign correspondent
for CBS after the war, he
recorded the history of war-
torn Europe arising like a
phoenix out of the ashes, the
immigration of European
'Jews to Palestine, and the
establishment of the State of
Israel.
Yaffe was one of the first
journalists — possibly even
the first one — to provide
serious and substantial
coverage of the struggle of
Soviet Jews to immigrate to
Israel or to live as Jews in the
USSR. As early as 1950. after
returning from his stint as a
CBS correspondent in East-
ern Europe, he wrote a five-
part series on the situation of
East European Jewry for the
National Jewish Monthly.
