Lawrence will discuss the impact of today's news and the news media. The program is open to the community. An "Outstanding Jour- nalism Graduate" of the Uni- versity of Florida and a graduate of the advanced management program at Harvard University, Lawr- ence has had a distinguished journalistic career of more than 20 years. He came to the Free Press as executive editor in 1978 and assumed his current position in 1985. He also served on numerous commu- nity organizational boards. The address by Lawrence will follow a presentation by the Greater Detroit Section of its Hannah G. Solomon Award to Gerald L. Levin. Levin, executive director of the Orchards Children's Serv- ices, has served in that capacity since 1966. Beth Shalom, will be the guest speaker at the Women of Jewish National Fund's p?'e- donor rally to be held on Tuesday at Temple Emanu- El, announced Bea Feigel- man, president. Rabbi Nelson will speak on "Do We Love Israel?" The event is the prelude to the women's 57th annual donor luncheon scheduled for Dec. 9 at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. At that time, the Women of JNF will begin their three-year challenge to raise $250,000 to build a sports field and recreational facility at the Beit Bluma School for Girls in Petach Tikvah. A native of Bridgeport, Conn., Rabbi Nelson earned a B.A. degree at Brandeis Uni- versity, attended the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and earned an MHL degree and rabbinical ordination at the Jewish Theological Seminary. Since his ordination, he has attended the Academy of Parish Clergy, the Achieve- ment Motivation Program and was a participant in the State of Michigan Conference on Substance Abuse. Succeeding the late Rabbi Mordecai S. Halpern in 1972 as the spiritual leader of Cong. Beth Shalom, Rabbi Nelson previously was the assistant and associate rabbi Rabbi David Nelson at Chizuk Amuno Congrega- tion in Baltimore, Md., and assistant rabbi at the As- sociacao Religiosa Israelita in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rabbi Nelson is the past president of the Conservative Rabbis of Metropolitan De- troit, vice president of the Rabbinical Commission of Metropolitan Detroit, chair- man of the Michigan-Ohio- Kentucky Region of the Rab- binical Assembly and a par- ticipant in the first rabbinic leadership institute at Bran- deis University.
