wo thousand years
ago, nearly all of our
ancestors were living
in Israel. Shortly after the
beginning of the common era,
they were served their evic-
tion notices and traipsed off
to various nooks and crannies
of the world, planning on re-
turning in the future, but
never getting down to it until
the First Aliyah near the end
of the 18th Century. About
70 years ago, during the Sec-
ond Aliyah, thousands of
Jews from Eastern Europe
returned to the Middle East.
Among those early pioneers
were Dina and Samuel Lev
who hailed from a small town
in Lithunia. Samuel was one
of the original builders of Tel
Aviv, and his son Dov . Lev
was born in that first modern
Jewish city.
Life is Israel is never easy
and in 1922 Dina, tired of the
hardships, left the country
with her young son, while
Samuel remained in Tel
Aviv. Eventually, through
Dov's uncle, mother and son
wound up in Livonia, Mich.
At Ellis Island, Dov's name
was changed by an immigra-
tion officer, from the Hebrew
version of "Bear Heart" to
the German translation, Ber-
nard Lieb. Today, Bernard's
daughter Mickey has changed
her name back to Lev, and
returned to Tel Aviv. Though
it was her first time in Israel,
she ended up staying for two
years and then returned to
Livonia for three months.

Shelley Sherman Nadiv is a
Detroiter who has lived in
Israel.

I was dying to see my family
and friends after being away
for so long. The day after I
came back, I went to the
aliyah office at the Jewish
Center and said, Esther, I
want to go home'. She
laughed when I told her I had
been here only 24 hours!"
After returning to Israel,
Mickey lived on a kibbutz in
the Golan Heights which she
wanted to join. Unfortu-
nately, some of the women
there were less than
enthused about having a
young single female in their
midst, so Mickey moved on.
In 1983, she studied at the
Givatayim Institute for Aca-
demics and is currently
teaching English to grades
five-nine at a religious school
in Pardess Katz. Mickey had
told me that the dress code at
the school was not very strict,
so I unwittingly showed up in
pants and short sleeves, only
to be informed that this is
not the style this year! When
. the male photographer
showed up sporting a small
ponytail, we were really ob-
jects of curiosity among the
young girls.
"The difference in the pub-
lic education system in Israel
and the United States is in-
credible," Mickey said. "Here
the students are in school six
days a week, five or six hours
a day and they're all sup-
posed to wear uniforms con-
sisting of blue jeans or skirts
and school shirts. This is one
of the concepts of socialism
and equity that one child
should not be better dressed
than another. The school I'm
teaching at is not particu-
larly .well funded. Students
have to buy their own books
and 'there's no audio-visual
equipment to use as learning
,aids.
