London (JTA ► — The For-
eign Office last Monday
ordered the British Ambas-
sador to Israel, William
Squires, to request a meeting
with the Foreign Ministry in
Jerusalem in the case of
Mordechai Vanunu, accused
of giving information to the
Sunday Times of London
about Israel's nuclear wea-
pons capability.
The Foreign Office acted in
response to demands by
British politicians and the
media for an explanation of
how Vanunu, reported miss-
ing in London on October 1,
was brought to Israel where
he is presently under deten-
tion awaiting formal charges
and trial.
The government here has
already denied media reports
that Shimon Peres, when he
was Israeli Prime Minir 4-.er
before the rotation of power
last month, secretly advised
Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher that Israeli agents
would abduct Vanunu on
British soil. According to the
reports, Thatcher did not
object.
The Israel government
acknowledged for the first
time that the former tech-
nician at the Dimona nuclear
facility was under detention

in Israel. It said that he was
abducted but did not say
under what circumstances he
was brought to Israel.
Vanunu will be charged
with either treason or es-
pionage. If convicted of es-
pionage, the 31 year-old
Israeli, who recently con-
verted to the Christian faith,
would face life imprisonment.
Capital punishment applies
for treason.
The government announced
that Vanunu is being held in
Israel "under lawful deten-
tion" and is represented by
counsel. He was remanded in
custody for 15 days by order
of a senior police officer, an in-
dication of the gravity of the
charges which will be brought
against him.
After the government's ad-
mission that Vanunu is in
custody, Amnon Zichroni, a
lawyer well known in leftist
circles, revealed that he had
been appointed to represent
the suspect, at his own re-
quest.
Vanunu's family in Beer-
sheba has been notified where
he is being held but has not
visited him until now. His
parents, Orthodox Jews of
Moroccan origin, publicly
disowned their son.

Detroit area Soviet Jewry
activists have expressed con-
cern about the families of two

Friends of the Soviet Jewry
Education and Information
Center report that Lev Elbert
had verbal assurances resci-
nded last week, and was told
that he would not be allowed
to leave the Soviet Union be-
cause the OVIR office had
discovered that Inna Elbert
was Lev's second wife. Elbert
has never been married be-
fore.
When Elbert told his father
of the series of events, the
senior Elbert suffered a fatal
heart attack. His burial was

Vladimir, who has triad''
several visits to Detroit this

City Removes
King's Plaque

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A plaque
honoring the late King
Mohammed of Morocco was
removed from the newly
named Peace Square in Ash-
kelon, barely a week after it
was dedicated at ceremonies
attended by Premier Shimon
Peres.
Mayor Eli Dayan said the
plaque was removed for
cleaning and maintenance. It
had been repeatedly van-
dalized with paint, hammer
blows and a pneumatic drill.
The name of the former ruler
of Morocco was obliterated
and replaced with the name
of Haim Azran, an Ashkelon
resident fatally stabbed by an
unknown' assailant in Gaza
