Peres Unveils
Development
Plan For Negev
Jerusalem (JTA) — Shimon
Peres, traveling to the United
States last Monday for the
first time as Israel's Foreign
Minister, said that he would
concentrate his efforts on at-
tracting American invest-
ment capital for the Negev.
At Peres' initiative, the
Negev 2000 Association
unveiled a plan for a new
deep-water port at Eilat to
replace the present limited
facilities and clear valuable
stretches of coastline for
tourist beach developments.
While in the U.S., Peres will
attend the General Assembly
of the Council of Jewish in
Chicago and meet with
Jewish leaders from all parts
of the country. He will also
meet with Richard Murphy,
Assistant Secretary of State
for Near Eastern and South
Asian Affairs.

Moshe Arens, a close political
associate of Prime Minister
Yitzhak Shamir, is also in the
U.S. Government sours in-
dicated he would have talks in
Washington and arrange for
Shamir's first visit to the U.S.
as Prime Minister, probably
early next year.

New York (JTA) — Nathan
Perlmutter, national director
of the Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith, called
on the United States Chess
Federation not to send an
American team to participate
in the International Chess
Olympiad in the United Arab
Emirates next month because
of that nation's policy of dis-
crimination and exclusion.
The United Arab Emirates
has refused to allow Israel to
participate in the olympiad in
Dubai. Their visa policy bars
Israeli nationals and "Zionist
sympathizers."
Perlmutter noted that
chess teams from Norway,
Sweden and the Netherlands
have refused to participate at
Dubai because of the Emi-
rates' exclusionary practices.
