LISTENING POST

DANNY RASKIN

RUTH SALEM had a very
unusual Yom Kippur ... Al-
though a foster mother years
ago, Ruth never thought
she'd be one to a two-year-old
beagle.
The dog was found by. a
friend who wanted to keep
her ... However, living in an
apartment was a no-no, so
Ruth took the beagle tempo-
rarily ... until her friend's
home was completed ...
After about a week or so,
suspect was of the dog being
pregnant ... and a veterina-
rian confirmed her suspicions
. . . So instead of going to
Yom Kippur services, Ruth
stayed home and helped de-
liver four babies ... "Number
three was breech," says Ruth,
"and I literally had to help
her push it out" ... Number
three wasn't breathing cor-
rectly and Ruth swung the
pup between her legs a few
times.
"I've seen many things in
my life," says Ruth, "and at
76 years of age I wasn't too
old to learn how to be a mid-
wife to a dog. In three weeks;
I want to help find a good
home for these four darling
puppies."
CONGRATS ... to Rose
and Jack Weiss ... on their
45th anniversary.
LINDA FAYNE has a
bone to pick with hubby Ron
Fayne . He knows she
loves to shop in New York,
but neglected to mention the
one-day shopping tour being
put on by Hamilton, Miller,
Hudson & Fayne Travel ...
with . Macy's and
Bloomingdale's giving gifts,
free storage of bags, etc.
MUMFORD 1956 class re-
union plans are in the mak-
ing ... for Nov. 29 at North-
field Hilton . . . Call Leslie
Denison Rogers, 335-2266, or

4259.
GREATER DETROIT
Council of Naamat/USA

at Sutton Place Clubhouse
. . . entertainment by mem-
bers of International Opera
Company, Dino Valle and

Money collected will be
used to buy Chanukah gifts

youngsters who might other-
wise not have a Chanukah
associated with gifts and its
joyfulness.
LIFE BEGINS AT 55 for
Lila Reder ... who keeps in
shape at the same time ...
20 years ago, we wrote about
Lila ... a puppeter then who
gave her noted puppet shows,
especially at holidays.
In 1981, Lila returned to
college, got her accounting
degree cum laude in 1984 ...
She lost 96 pounds in 1985
and decided accounting had
her sitting around too much
... which was no good since

Lila exercised from the first
day of dieting.
She studied about healthy
foods for our bodies, went to
lectures and dragged hubby
Sam along ... Now she is the
maven of exercise in Hun-
tington Woods . . . teaches
classes to youngsters 3-5
years-old and their mothers
... at the same time ... Lila
also teaches rhythm and
movement to 2-4 year-olds.
BIRTH ANNOUNCE-
MENT comes from Diane
Dickinson of Corporation
Cortina at Sugar Tree on Or-
chard Lake Rd. ... Picture is
of her dog and its litter ...
announcement reads, "Name:
8 yet to be determined. Date:
10/30. Time: 2:28 a.m. till
7:38 a.m. Weight: 1/3 lb.
each. Length 4 1/2" each. Proud
parents Nisha Dickinson and
Chopper Yera."
EVER HAVE AN URGE
to take an apple while in a
market? ... If so, you can do
it without any hassle at Ever
Green Market, Lathrup Vil-
lage on Evergreen and 11
Mile ... It's owner, Arnie
Raft's thought was because
when a young kid, he always
took an apple at the old Oak-
land Market on Manchester
and Oakland Ave. in High-
land Park ... He doesn't
even say anything when
people try his grapes.
Wife Connie Raft is cause
of Arnie opening the market
... Her gals • at salon around
the corner complained about
getting their hair done and
having to go so far to shop.
Arnie went into it but not
in just the ordinary way ...
He makes homemade gour-
met salads every day, has a
bakery, natural bar-b-q chic-
ken fresh daily.
TWO MEDICAL STU-
DENTS in college created an
idea and are carrying it out
to garner some bucks.
James Zelch is at Univer-
sity of Michigan Med School
... and Jack Folbe attends
Wayne State U. Med. School
. . . The two ambitious 24-
year-old gents have a busi-
ness called "Your Personal
Cleaner" in which they pick
up and deliver everything
that has to be cleaned ... It's
a three-day service and all
people pay for is the cleaning.
at
MUCH HOOPLA
overwhelming victory party
for Judge Jessica Cooper ...
as she joins Hilda Gage and
Alice Gilbert in becoming
third Jewish woman Circuit
Court jurist in Oakland
County ... There are only
three women on the circuit
bench.
Clean campaign for Jessica
was run by Al Holtz, Brian
Levy, Fred Melemed and
Barry Howard ... with much,
much credos also for the
great work done by all her
helpers.
CONGRATS ... to my
wife Frieda ... on her birth-
day ... (Heaven forbid I
should forget!)
