Page 88 you're likely to be most well received, says Sally F. "Monday and Tuesday nights are good times to try the glitzier places," she suggests. "On Friday and Saturday nights, even reg- ular customers may be claw- ing each other for tables. So if you go on either of these nights, it's not surprising that a maitre d' may try to stick you behind a potted palm." Marge R. tries to seek out cheery restaurants which she calls "just this side of funky." She rarely feels ill at ease in a Chinese or Japanese res- taurant where the atmos- phere tends to be more down home. She makes a point of trying fancier restaurants for breakfast or lunch. Betty W. spent the first six months alone frequenting fast food outlets. When she could no longer down another burger or taco, she survived on canned soup and TV dinners. - "Dining out alone causes more consternation than any other solo activity," she says. "I think that the restaurant and the hour you choose to dine are important considera- tions. Smaller, quainter places are more conducive to the single diner than others. "I tried dining early before the crowds arrived. I felt more relaxed because occupy- ina a table for two makes me b uneasy. But sometimes feel it's the personnel in a restau- rant who make you feel that way." Noticing you're alone, people will sometimes ap- proach you, says Lillian P. Waiters and waitresses will strike up conversations and diners at other tables may even send you a drink. You can catch the eye of another solitary diner, something you couldn't do if you stayed home and ate Stouffer's. "In a restaurant you feel like the Lone Ranger," says Janice G. "Can eating out yourself ever be pleasant when you go anywhere be- sides the corner coffee shop?" While some singles say they're treated like social outcasts when they dine alone, others say this experi- ence grows less common every year. Maybe that's be- cause singlehood in the last decade has achieved a new status and respectability if for no other reason than it's a state populated by millions.
