State University law profes-
sor, argued the case against
the Birmingham creche for
the American Civil Liberties
Union of Michigan, who
brought the suit along with
Sedler.
Birmingham City Attorney
Jon Kingsepp suggested that
the city might add "non-
religious" holiday symbols
such as a Santa Claus to the
display in order to make it
acceptable, display the creche
on non-public property, or let
the creche remain in storage,
where it has been since 1984
after having been displayed
annually for more than 35
years.
A 1984 U.S. Supreme
Court decision allowed the
continued display of a nativ-
ity scene in Pawtucket, R.I.
because it was surrounded by
"non-religious" symbols of
Christmas.
