feelings about God."
In his talk on Sunday,
Rabbi Syme will explore "the
need for us to engender an
unselfconscious discussion of
God in our lives."
Prior to becoming a UAHC
vice president in 1985, he
was executive assistant to the
UAHC president, director of
education for the UAHC and
director of its Commission of
Jewish Education for the Re-
form Movement.
In 1981, he was named di-
rector of the UAHC Televi-
sion and Film Institute, a
project about which he speaks
excitedly. According to Syme,
the film and TV department
produces original videos and
films aimed at teaching
Jewish values. One series,
Great Jewish Personalities of
the 20th Century, talks to
Jewish notables about "hu-
man Jewish questions." Com-
edian George Burns discussed
his background (his father
was a cantor and kashrut
supervisor) and sang a Yid-
dish song. Another series
deals with issues of Jewish
concern, such as interfaith
marriage and cults.
In the planning is a series
of animated stories from the
Bible on cassette, featuring
the voices of actors such as
Robbie Benson and Ed Asner.
Rabbi Syme was graduated
from the University of Michi-
gan and the Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of
Religion and received many
academic prizes. He holds a

Rabbi Daniel Syme

doctorate in education from

Columbia University
Teachers College and is the
author of numerous, articles
and co-author of many books
dealing with Jewish concerns.
He has served on a variety
of Jewish educational bodies
and served as executive pro-
ducer of seven UAHC televi-
sion programs.
As a full-time vice
president of the UAHC, Syme
speaks to about 75-100 con-
gregations every year. He
takes his wife and son along
when he can, otherwise, he
arranges his travel "in
bunches." Although his job is
demanding, "my family
comes first." ❑

Women To Participate
In Electing Rabbi

Jerusalem, (JTA) — The
participation of women in
religious affairs is gaining
ground in Israel despite
entrenched opposition within
the Orthodox establishment.
The Knesset's interior com-
mittee voted Monday to sup-
port the appointment of
women to local religious
councils.
The Labor Party an-
nounced that two women will
be included in its delegation
to the 96-member electoral
college that will choose the
next Ashkenazi chief rabbi of
Tel Aviv, replacing Rabbi
Yedidya Frenkl who died last
month. Shinui, Mapam and
the Liberal Party factions
have also agreed to appoint
women electors.
Although Herut and the
religious party factions will
be represented exclusively by
men, women will be in a
majority on the 32-member
section of the electoral college
nominated by the city coun-
cil. The remaining two-thirds
are nominated by local
synagogues and the religious
council.
An Orthodox member of
the interior committee,
Mayor Ovadia Eli of Afula,
voted with the majority for

the election of women to reli-
gious councils. He noted that
the councils are State bodies,
not halachic institutions.
Their function is to provide
religious services for all sec-
tors of the population. Eli
said he saw no reason to
exclude women from the
councils.
But it is still an uphill
fight for Leah Shakdiel, the
first woman in Israel's his-
tory to be elected to a reli-
gious council, in Yerucham, a
small development town in
the Negev. She was elected
last January as the Labor
Party candidate but was im-
mediately challenged by the
religious affairs ministry, Or-
thodox rabbis and religious
politicians.
They continue to block her,
and Shakdiel, a 35-year-old
teacher and mother of three,
who is herself Orthodox, said
last week that she will take
her case to the Supreme
Court.
A less controversial ap-
pointment was made in
Safad, where Menucha Pantz,
a grandmother in her fifties,
was named gabbai (warden)
of an Orthodox synagogue —
on the recommendation of her
rabbi.
