She wanted it. She needed

Parking
In Rear

She gave up her claim reluc-
'-tantly, a difficult and corn-
y mendable gesture on her part,
lupon realizing that it had
been vacated for the old lady.
She remained standing but
innoyed, a very tired young
woman.
One stop later, another seat
became available as a hollow-
cheeked man in a tattered
raincoat rose to leave. The
1 1 two people with the best shot
;.?t the vacancy were me and
-"die tired young woman. Our
eyes met. You've got to be
tough to ride the local bus. A
bus seat belongs to the quick
and the strong. I didn't care.
Graciously, I offered the
seat to the T.YW.
Even more graciously, she
refused.
She looked me square in the
face and said, "That's okay.
'You take it."
Just like that! I had been
seen, judged, found wanting,
-.nd placed in the category of
`Old, worthy of a seat on the
bus." This was a new situa-
=tion for me.
I started to sit but a voice
- inside me cried, "NO! NO!
NO! You, tired young woman,
you take the seat! This is
more important than com-
petitive bus riding. You are
redefining my position in
society. Don't be the one who
rmshes me over the line into
ld age. I can still climb
mountains. I can hike the
tundra. A fire burns within."
But I could see no under-
standing in her young face.
Only the cruelest of sen-
timents: kindness, concern,
sympathy.
I sat down.

PLO Applies
To Red Cross

Geneva (JTA) — The
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization has applied for ob-
c-z-rver status with the Inter-
uational Red Cross and Red
Crescent Movement. The re-
quest, by Dr. Fathi Arafat,
brother of PLO chairman
Yasir Arafat, followed a re-
cent decision to incorporate
the Red Crescent into the
movement. The Red Crescent
is the Red Cross equivalent
in Moslem countries.
A commission will examine
the applications of the PLO
and other groups that claim
to be national liberation
movements. According to ob-
servers, in Geneva, all of the
applications will probably be
accepted.
But the quadrennial con-
. ference of the International
Red Cross Movement which
ended Nov. 1, refused to
budge with respect to the
long-standing request by the
Magen David Adorn for
:recognition by the Red Cross.
