Spokesmen for PACs in both Washington and Detroit were upbeat over the number of pro-Israel Sena- tors who were elected, and by the choices the Jewish PACs made in choosing which candidates to sup- port. Richard Altman, head of the National PAC (NATPAC) in Wash- ington, told The Jewish. News that his organization contributed more than $1 million to political candi- dates in 1986. NATPAC made con- tributions to candidates in 31 of the 34 Senate races nationwide, and 27 of its 31 candidates were elected. Economic Club Hosts Shimon Peres . Staff Report Shimon Peres, Israel's foreign minister and vice premier, will make a whistle-stop visit to Detroit next Friday to address the Economic Club of Detroit. Peres will fly in from Chicago, where he is scheduled Thursday night to address the 3,000 delegates to the Council of Jewish Federations' General Assembly. He will spend 45 minutes in Detroit before jetting to New York in time for the start of Shabbat. The Economic Club arranged for Peres' appearance, according to president Wes Johnson. The former Israel prime minister's visit is "a compliment to our city and our club," he said. Peres will speak on "Israel's Economy — A Progress Report." He will address members of the Eco- nomic Club and their guests at the Westin Hotel. A second spokesman for NAT- PAC said that most of the candi- dates it supported were incumbents. NATPAC is a single-issue group, basing its support on the candidate's backing of Israel. Even in cases where a NATPAC candidate lost, the spokesman said, the winner has a positive record on support for Israel. As examples, the spokesman pointed to the Senate races in Florida and Washington where Republican in- cumbents Paula Hawkins and Slade Gorton were defeated. "(Former Florida Governor) Bob Graham will be just as good as Hawkins," he said, "and Brock Adams will be just as positive as Gorton." The successful defense of his Se- nate seat by Steven D. Symms in Idaho was seen as a loss by many, but NATPAC took a positive ap- proach. "Gov. John Evans has been better on Israel, but Symms has been very, very positive in recent statements and his recent votes have been better," the spokesman said. "Fantastic, tremendous, super" were the adjectives used by Morris Amitay to describe the Senate re- sults. Amitay heads the Washington PAC and is former head of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. He said the "only race we lost" was Evans vs. Symms, and "if you look, we gained a whole list of pro-Israel senators who are more supportive of Israel than those they replaced."
