S Ingle people need to
exercise in situations
which maximize
socializing opportunities. At
the same time, they should
be mindful of the benefits of
exercise.
What are the benefits of
exercise? The most common
goals are: a lea_n body and
good muscle tone, high
energy level, health and
socialization for single people.
Women have a natural dis-
advantage in the quest for
fitness. The feminizing hor-
mone, estrogen, tends to
promote the formation of fat,
particularly in breasts, hips
and thighs. Because women
have much higher levels of
this hormone than men,
women have a natural ten-
dency to become fatter than
men.
Obesity is a disease of
underactivity rather than a
disease of overeating. In fact,
most thin people who are
active eat more than most
obese people who are in-
active. The average active
person consumes 600 calories
a day more than the average
obese person.
The best way to lose fat is
by a combination of diet and
exercise. Exercise promotes a
loss of fat in several ways.
First of all, sustained exer-
tion, like running, fast walk-
ing, bicycling, swimming and
aerobics, burns a lot of
calories during the exercise
session. In addition,
endurance exercise also
speeds up the metabolism,
which allows a person to
burn more calories after
exercise.
Because muscle requires
more energy to be main-
tained than fat, muscular
people burn more calories
than fat people of the same
weight. Persons who exercise
regularly to maintain rea-
sonable muscle tone will burn
more calories even while rest-
ing. When losing fat from
exercising, one will lose the
fat from all over his/her body.
At least one half of the fat is
located just underneath the

skin and over the muscles. As
a result of this fat loss, one
may be able to see muscles
previously unnoticed.
The second most popular
reason for exercising is
greater energy. Tired from
exercise? The truth is that
the body becomes an efficient
energy machine; manufactur-
ing energy at a much greater
level. Exercise increases
heart and lung capacity
which more highly oxyge-
nates your blood and in-
creases nourishment to the
cells. In addition, the
nourishment to the brain
helps one's emotional being.
Being single puts greater
demands on one's time —
sometimes it is easier to put
off exercise for the sake of
other responsibilities. 'Single
people particularly must
function adequately in all
walks of life. These demands
are both stressful and time
consuming. Rather than a
further drain on energy,
exercise increases the ability
to meet these demands
adequately. The details of
ways in which exercise in-
creases energy are technical,
but believe the testimonials
of the many involved in ac-
tivity — activity results in
more energy.
The third and most impor-
tant goal is emotional and
physical health which are in-
exorably entwined. Because
of the stress and strains of
modern life, greater numbers
of people are searching for
ways to find freedom from
anxiety.
Of course, with all the so-
cial conversation, books and
magazines written, everyone
has a basic knowledge of the
health benefits of exercise. In
addition to those previously
mentioned, these include:
stronger bones; healthier
heart; more flexibility;
stronger muscles.
Physicians have recently
discovered a positive rela-
tionship between exercise and
cancer. Exercise also helps
balance the cholesterol prob-
lem so common in the U.S.
The best way for singles to
accomplish their exercise and
social goals is through group
activity. Exercise studios are
great for achieving these go-
als. Health clubs offer exer-
cise classes that generally
place higher emphasis on re-
