THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

Iris Kaufman of West
Bloomfield was elected the
first woman chairman of the
Detroit Educational Televi-
sion Foundation's board of
trustees at its annual meet-
ing. The DETF board holds
the license for WTVS/
Channel 56, Detroit Public
Television.
A trustee of the DETF
board since 1972, Kaufman
has been one of the vice
chairmen of the executive
committee since 1978. She
has held positions on a
number of other board com-
mittees, including two search
committees (which coordi-
nated the filling of two
WTVS president/general
manager openings); nominat-
ing committee; marketing
committee; and endowment
committee. Kaufman has also
served public television na-
tionally as a lay representa-
tive to PBS.
Coming to Channel 56 ini-
tially as a volunteer, Kauf-
man was major gifts chair-
man for the auction for sev-
eral years and chaired the
station's art auction.

CPI Figures

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
consumer price index for Sep-
tember was slightly higher
than economic experts ex-
pected — 1.9 percent — but
Treasury officials rushed to
explain the rise as a result of
seasonal changes, which did
not mean cracks in the price
stability of the last year-
and-a-half. Since the begin-
ning of the year, prices have
risen by 12 percent, and in
the last 12 months by 19 per-
cent.
