ne of the longest
active "drug rings"
in Oakland County
will hold its annual gather-
ing next week, and local
police departments will ig-
nore the meeting.
But a number of Jewish
poor in the Detroit area, and
other Jewish charitable
groups, will be direct be-
neficiaries of the meeting, the
60th annual dinner-dance of
the Aesculapian Pharmaceut-
ical Association. The group of
mostly-retired Jewish phar-
macists and its 63-member
ladies' auxiliary uses the pro-
ceeds from the dinner and
additional donations to pay
for prescriptions for needy
Detroit area Jews.
"Our membership has
dwindled from a high of 400
to approximately 100 now,"
said Allan Kaftan, president
of 'Aesculapians. "Most of our
members are retired, or they
do some relief work (working
part-time) for other pharma-
cists." Despite declining
numbers, last year's Aescula-
pians' dinner and ad book
raised $5,000 for the organ-
ization's charities. This year's
event will be held next
Thursday at Cong. Beth
Achim.
Approximately $3,000 has
been spent by the Aescula-
pians so far this year to pay
for prescriptions for 20-25 el-
derly couples. According to
Mrs. Yetta Bez, auxiliary
president, the names of those
needing assistance are pro-
vided by county social serv-
ices and Jewish agencies. A
committee from the auxiliary
screens the requests, and
recommends a pharmacy near
the client's home.
In addition to the prescrip-
tion fund, the Aesculapians
contribute to the communal
seders and Chanukah parties
for isolated Detroit Jews
sponsored by the Cooperative
Council of the League of
Jewish Women's Organiza-
tions. In addition, according
to long-time member Zelda
Tennen, individuals in the
auxiliary respond to emer-
gency requests from the
Cooperative Council for the
Jewish needy.
The Aesculapians were
formed in 1920 by Bernard
"Pop" Friedlander.. In 1937,
the group organized the
pharmacy at the Jewish
Home for Aged, which for
many years was staffed by
Aesculapian volunteers. Aes-
culapians contributed $25,000
towards the formation of the
pharmacy program at He-
brew University of
Jerusalem, and continues to
provide laboratory equipment
and scholarship funds for
pharmacy students at Wayne
State University. They also
make an annual donation to
Yeshivah Beth Yehudah.
For dinner information for
Thursday's affair, call trea-
surer Michael Wainer, 557-
3625; Mrs. Tennen, 967-3661;
or Sam Plucer, 851-4134.
Moynihan Will Speak
At HMC Anniversary
Daniel
Senator
U.S.
Moynihan (D-N.Y.) will be
the featured speaker Nov. 9
at the Holocaust Memorial
Center's second anniversary
dinner at the Westin Hotel.
During the dinner, the
HMC will honor a righteous
gentile who, during World
War II, helped thousands of
Jews escape death, and will
posthumously award him its
second Righteousness Award.
At the same time, the
HMC will also launch a cam-
paign to make the Hebrew
word and symbol, "Zachor" —
remember — part of a new
universal culture having as
its goal the drawing of proper
lessons of the Holocaust.
The late Reverend Andre
Trocme, who inspired his vil-
lage to rescue persecuted and
hunted Jews, will be recog-
nized with the HMC Right-
eousness Award. Reverend
Trocme and other residents of
Le Chambon — sur Lignon,
France, are credited with sav-
ing from 3,000 to 5,000 chil-
dren and adults.
Mrs. Nelly Hewett, of St.
Daniel Moynihan.
Paul, Minn., 'Rev. Trocme's
daughter, will accept the
award on behalf of her late
father. Jack Lewin, of Wood-
mere, N.Y., is presenting the
award. Lewin was among
those rescued by Trocme and
the residents of Le Chambon.
