BACK IN 1979, Esther
Shapiro, Detroit's consumer
affairs director, talked about
"kosher dog food" . . . I've
been looking ever since then
and still haven't found any
... but her radio broadcasts
about them were most
humorous.
Here are Esther's two
broadcasts:
APRIL 5, 1979 "A few
weeks ago I commented on
some new trends in the dog
food market, in which fancy
specialized brands are push-
ing ordinary, low-cost pet
foods off the shelves. You can
buy high-protein dog food for
the picky pups, low-cal for
the fatties, and if the gov-
ernment, approves, a product
containing birth control
chemicals for frisky lady
dogs.

THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

minds of an advertising
group comes the latest —
kosher dog food, according to
Advertising Age. Mother
Klein's Kosher Style canned
food is the creation of three
ad men and the head of a
novelty marketing company.
They were looking for a new
gimmick — perhaps a useful
pet rock. They tested the idea
by buying a dog food already
on the market, and put it up
for sale with their own label.
Actor Herschel Bernardi, who
once starred in a stage ver-
sion of Fiddler on the Roof, is
featured in ads discussing the
difficulties in determining
whether or not a dog is
Jewish. He says this problem
arose when many dogs
anglicized their names as
they came to this country. As
an example, he cites the
Goldberg Retriever.
"The ad campaign was
tested in Fresno, Calif., an
area with few Jews and many
Armenians. The response was
encouraging. "Kosher Style"
was included in the name of
the product because tests
have shown that the word
kosher is perceived by most
people as indicating a
cleaner, more nutritious
product. Of course the dog
food is not kosher at all — a
ritual process which has
nothing to do with nutrition.
But one of the promoters
says, 'It means the dog food is
made with care, tradition and
quality of kosher foods.' He
doesn't say how that care will
be exercised, since the outfit
has not decided whether to
create their own formula or
to buy a private label dog
,food — all of which are made
with distinctly non-kosher
products.
"The food will come in
three flavors: brisket of beef,
almost chopped liver and
chicken (without the soup)
and will bear a photograph of
Mrs. Klein, actually an old
photo found in an antique
shop. The can also boasts,
`Quality since 5736.' That's
the Hebrew year when the
food was hatched. I wonder if
dogs can sue for false adver-
tising? This is Esther Shap-
iro, Detroit's Consumer Af-
fairs Director reporting for
News Radio 95."
APRIL 6, 1979 "In my last
broadcast I reported the
latest development in pam-
pered pet mania — kosher
style dog food. The reaction
has gone from amusement to
outrage, depending on how
seriously one takes this kind
of nonsense.
"Among those who defi-
nitely were not amused was
Allen Cohen, president of the
Kosher Meat Dealers Asso-
ciation. For the past 15 years
Mr. Cohen has waged a
lonely, and sometimes losing
battle, to place legal limita-
tions on the indiscriminate
use of the word kosher. The
word is popular; the pro-
ducers of the dog food decided
on it because their tests indi-

cated that people perceive i:,
as a cleaner, more nutritious
product. Placing a label on a
food that implies it's kosher
is one thing, the kosher proc-
ess is another — it's involved,
time-consuming, and not at
all cheap.
"A kosher label requires
the supervision of men
trained in the necessary
Judaic rituals, and can only
be used on foods prepared in
accordance with Jewish law.
So a lot of food producers try
for the name without the
game; they place "kosher
style" labels on foods that
would not be allowed in the
back door of any self-
respecting synagogue. New
York and California have
laws prohibiting the use of
the term "kosher style" on
the grounds that the term is
deceptive. 'You can't be im-
itation kosher or a little bit
kosher,' says Mr. Cohen. 'It's
like being a little bit pre-
gnant.'
"Mr. Cohen's bitterness
about the subject stems from
his long fight to place legal
sanctions on the misuse of
the word. A bill was passed
in the Michigan legislature,
and signed into law by the
governor, in 1966. But no
appropriation or means of
enforcement followed, so un-
like other states which take a
firm stand on violations,
Michigan lets the misuse,
and the deception, go un-
punished, and the Depart-
ment of Agriculture does
nothing about the flouting of
the law.
"One interesting side note:
The State Senator who intro-
duced the kosher bill contin-
ued his fight for consumer re-
form. Some years later, he
was elected Mayor of Detroit.
This is Esther Shapiro, De-
troit's Consumer Affairs Di-
rector, reporting for News
Radio 95."
