"We picked those places be-
cause they have a high con-
centration of 11-to-18-year-
olds," explains Lou." It's the
age range which seems to
evidence the greatest degree
of abuse and neglect cases."
"We believe strongly that
the children of today are the
adults of tomorrow," he say-
s."If we were to contribute
something meaningful in life,
it was to have a positive im-
pact on children."
Throughout their 35-year
marriage, the Landaus have
directed Boy Scouts, Brow-
nies, Camp Fire Girls, par-
ticipated in Kiwannis, been
consistently active in PTO,
served on Cong. B'nai
Moshe's Youth Commission
and opened their home to a
Brazilian Jewish foreign ex-
change student for six
months.
For 26 years, Lou was an
integral part of the Met-
ropolitan Detroit Science and
Engineering Fair, moving up
several positions to that of
director. He was Wolverine
State chairman of Boys' State
and Girls' State.
These activities have all
been avocations. For 23
years, he was on the profes-
sional staff of the Plant
Engineering Group of
Parke-Davis. A career switch
moved him to director of
downtown properties for H.C.
Real Estate, a subsidiary of
Blue Cross/Blue Shield. His
work was noticed by the Cen-
tral Business District Asso-
ciation last April, which hon-
ored him as one of 13 "Good
Will Ambassadors."
"Lou was recognized both
for conveying a warm image
within the city and for mak-
ing sure operations at the
Fort Street-Beaubien people
mover station run smoothly,"
explains Gayla Hauser,
CBDA vice president.
In the Landau family, Lou
doesn't have a monopoly on
conveying a warm image.
Joy, who operates a day-care
center in their home, extends
the Laudau "open-door pol-
icy" to customers, friends and
strangers alike.
Jimmie Estell, youth spe-
cialist at Maxey, has been
coordinating with the Land-
aus for five years. "Many of
the boys have been living at
Maxey for several years,"
says Estelle, "and they really
look forward to receiving the
candy and gifts."
Joy Landau, he says, "is an
outstanding lady who is very,
very dedicated. Her boundless
energy makes me tired."
"There was always a tre-
mendous amount of love in
our home," says daughter
Maureen Broder. "Mom and
Dad were strict, but they al-
ways gave a lot of hugs. It
was obvious they cared very
much for one another, re-
spected each other and I truly
feel it taught us kids a lot
about developing relation-
ships."
Her parents also gave them
