Since the "single issue" re-
ferred to is the survival of Is-
rael, it must take precedence
over lesser concerns. Israel
cannot suffer atone major de-
feat; local issues are reversi-
ble.
Many spokesmen are not
always award of their intent;
they really wish to change
the order of our priorities. To
them, Israel may be of secon-
dary importance. They rather
emphasize their type of "civil
liberties" which allows the
Nazis to march in Skokie to
confront many Holocaust
survivors. To them "civil
rights" is embraced even if it
results in reverse discrimina-
tion. Desegregation, a legiti-
mate goal, is expanded to in-
clude forced busing, thus

changing an established
neighborhood into a chaotic
and crime-ridden one.
To some liberals abortion
on demand is a substitute for
contraception. Teenage preg-
nancy is encouraged as a way
of life and a new career for
women without spouses. To
some, teenage crime is ex-
plained away by racism and
poverty that can only be
cured by more federal money.
There was much more pov-
erty during the Depression,
and much less crime.
It is not compassion, but
cruelty, to perpetuate such a
self-destructive system in the
name of historiCal liberalism.
The challenges for 1986 can-
not be met by the "Maginot
Line" of 1936.

At the outset, may I com-
mend you on the new section
in The Jewish News entitled
"People Connector." Hope-
fully, new friendships will re-
sult from it.
At the same time, I would
call your attention to one ad
that was offensive, and in
very bad taste. It went as fol-
lows: "Tired of dating goyim?
I'm done practicing with
shiksas. Fun-loving, sincere,
romantic, compassionate, pro-
fessional male non-smoker
seeks female with same
attributes ..."
Anyone who is familiar
with Hebrew is aware of the
fact that "shiksa" is derived
from the word "sheh-kets"
which means dirt. I am sure
that if an ad ran in a non-
Jewish paper with similar
derogatory references to
Jews, the entire Jewish
community would be up in
arms.
It is good to be sensitive to
our own feelings. It is equally
important to be sensitive to
the feelings of the non-Jewish
community. I hope that your
paper will continue to build
bridges of understanding,
that will link people of all
races and religions into a liv-
ing and loving community.

A Matter
Of Conscience

Recent agreements between
the United States and the
Soviet Union allow for cul-
tural exchanges between the
two countries. Many Ameri-
cans, Jews included, desire to
attend these events, yet feel
guilty in doing so.
Each individual must
examine his own conscience
and make his own decision.
To assist you in making your
decision I would like to ask

JEWELERS, LTD.

some questions.
Do you approve of Soviet
treatment of its Jewish popu-
lation?
Do you agree that Andrei
Sakharov should be exiled in
Gorky, and Ida Nudel exiled
to Bendry?
Are you comfortable know-
ing that every dollar the
Soviets earn on these ex-
changes is used to the detri-
ment of the United States
and Israel, and to maintain
the inhuman conditions of
the Gulag?
If you can answer yes to
these questions then enjoy
the Moiseyev dancers and
other Soviet performances.
If you want to send a mes-
sage to the Soviet leadership
that we find their total disre-
gard for human rights utterly
detestable, then please stay
home and urge everyone you
know to do the same. If each
event would play to a near
empty house, it will em-
phasize the fact that we are
serious when we declare our
solidarity with our Soviet
brothers and sisters.
