Thecidore Ellenoff, presi- dent of the American Jewish Committee, said that the peo- ple's Party's statement, corn- municated to the AJC, was also a "vitally important" assurance to Austria's small Jewish community. The com- munity had been seriously of- fended by the anti-Semitic backlash to the exposure of People's Party candidate Kurt Waldheim's Nazi war- time past during the cam- paign. Waldheim was elected President of Austria by a landslide vote last July 8.
