Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's
first liver transplant patient,
Mira Schichmanter, turned
40 years old and her condition
was described as "somewhat
improved"last week.
Schichmanter is linked to
respiratory equipment and
her doctors reported no
significant progress in the
functioning of her new liver.
After undergoing the con-
troversial 20-hour transplant
operation, she remained in
critical condition for several
days, resting in the intensive
care isolation unit of Ram-
barn Hospital in Haifa. She is
reportedly fully conscious
and even spoke a few words
with doctors and family.
Dr. Yigal Kam, who per-
formed the operation, said he
would have to wait several
more days before he could
determine if the operation
was a success. After three to
four weeks, doctors can deter-
mine if her body had accepted
the liver.
The donor, a 19-year-old
woman soldier from Kibbutz
Shaar Ha'amakin, died in a
car accident. Prior to Schich-
manter's operation, liver
transplants were forbidden in
Israel by religious authorities
because of a technical argu-
ment over the definitions of
death. In order to donate a
liver, the donor's heart must
still be beating, even if the
donor is brain dead and arti-
ficial means are used to keep
the heart beating. In the rab-
binical definition of death,
though, a person is dead only
when the heart stops beating.
In another development,
less than a week after
Schichmanter's operation,
Rambam Hospital in Haifa
announced that a surgical
team had performed Israel's
second liver transplant opera-
tion. The hospital said the
surgical team was headed by
Dr. Yigal Kam and that the
patient was male, transferred
from Hadassah Hospital in
Jerusalem.

New Churchill
Study Released
London (JTA) — A highly
critical new study of Sir
Winston Churchill, Britain's
wartime leader, finds him
guilty of failing to give direct
help to the Jews of Europe in
their hours of greatest need.
Contrary to the usual . sym,
pathetic Jewish view of
ChUrchill, it also questions
the depth of his support for
the Jewish cause in Palestine
and suggests a strong trace of
opportunism in his support
for Zionism early in his
career.
These are among the key
conclusions of Prof. Michael
Cohen, a British-born histo-
