sibilities.
The question of how much
and what kind of insurance
to buy does have a practical
answer. The smart purchaser
looks at the alternative forms
of insurance available and
makes a decision based on
his/her objectives and needs.
An important consideration
in making this decision is the
length of time for which
coverage will be necessary.
Why would a single person
without a family even con-
sider the purchase of life in-
surance? If we look at -this
issue from a practical point of
view, there may be several
valid reasons. There may be
a financial obligation the
single person feels toward a
parent or an agency that fi-
nanced his/her education.
Perhaps he/she is helping to
support an indigent parent or
relative. There may be a par-
ticular charity to which a
single person would like to
leave money. Also, a single
person may wish to leave
enough money to cover last
expenses, such as funeral
costs, estate taxes, etc.
The insurability question is
often raised by agents and
with valid reason. If there is
a family history of adult
onset problems such as diab-
etes, hypertension, heart
problems or cancer and at
some time in the future the
single decides he/she wants
life insurance, it may not be
available to him/her.
This problem can be
avoided by buying reasonably
inexpensive term insurance,
a new low-level premium
universal life policy, a van-
ishing premium interest, sen-
sitive whole life policy or a
vanishing premium, univer-
sal life product. This insur-
ance should he purchased
while the person is young
and before potential health
problems develop.
When considering the
different types of policies and
companies, it is easy to be-
come confused. One should
insist that all comparisons
are shown using a common
reasonable interest rate as-
sumption (seven or eight per-
cent). It is also important
when evaluating comparisons
between products a)id/or
companies that have been
presented by an agent, that
full disclosures are included
as to how the comparisons
were made. One should also
investigate the company and
its history of payments to
previous policyholders.
