Long active in Jewish Wel- fare Federation activities, Newman is a local and na- tional board member of the American Technion Society and a member of the interna- tional board of governors of the Technion Israel Institute of Technology. The Detroit Chapter Techn- ion Research and Develop- ment Fund will help Israel through Technion to achieve economic independence by promoting technological in- novations at Technion that will produce new made-in- Israel products, processes and systems to compete on the world markets. Technion students and fa- culty specialize in fields with high R and D potentials. Dinner chairman is Irwin Green, and Yosef Yaakov, consul general of Israel in Washington, D.C. and minis- ter counsellor in the embassy, is the guest speaker. Aid For Flood, Quake Victims The American Red Cross will accept disaster welfare inquiries from Detroit-area residents who have next of kin living in the earthquake-stricken areas of El Salvador, at 833-4440. In the United States, the Red Cross is still assisting flood victims throughout the - Midwest. In mid-Michigan, the Red Cross has provided shelter, food and assistance for more than 2,500 families in the 14-county area affected by the severe flooding. The cost of the relief operation locally has been estimated at - $1.6 million. . .
