New System Aids
Hearing Impaired

Invisible light waves that
carry sound are enabling the
hearing impaired to enjoy
events at the Jewish Com-
munity Center of Metropoli-
tan Detroit. The Infrared Lis-
tening System was purchased
for the JCC with grants from
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion and the United Founda-
tion. Installation of the sys-
tem will take place at both
Center buildings.
A transmitter converts
sound into infrared light
waves and a receiver trans-
lates them back into sound.
The receivers are worn either
as an attachment to a hear-
ing air or under the chin in a
manner similar to a stethos-
cope. One of the advantages
of this new system is that
people who are using it are
not restricted as to their seat
location in the auditorium.
There will be a nominal
charge to replace the dispos-
able ear pads for each patron
who uses the receiver.
In addition to its use at the
JCC, the device is currently
being used at the Kennedy
Center in Washington, D.C.,
Lincoln Center and the Met-
ropolitan Opera in New York,
and the Power Center in Ann
Arbor. Instrumental in ob-
taining this equipment for
the Center were Beverly
Mitchell, advisor for services
to the hearing impaired; Dul-
cie Rosenfeld, chairperson of
the JWF Task Force on the
Elderly; Sidney Freedland,
president of the JCC, Irwin
Shaw, executive vice
president emeritus, JCC; and
Dr. Morton Plotnick, execu-
tive director, JCC.

University of Michigan reci-
pient of the Schlumberger
Collegiate Award for 1986-
1987. A U of M Rackham
Scholar, Sandra is a senior in
