The Arnold Klein Gallery,
4520 N. Woodward, Royal
Oak, will showcase mural
studies, drawings and paint-
ings of the late Detroit artist
Henry Bernstein beginning
Saturday.
The Bernstein exhibition
will run through Nov. 22.
Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-
5:30 p.m. Tuesday through
Saturday.
Mr. Bernstein's career got
its start at the Detroit
Society of Arts and Crafts
(now Center for Creative
Studies). He studied under
the direction of famed New
York artist John Carroll, and
thereafter many of his works
reflected the teachings of his
instructor.
In 1931, he exhibited his
paintings and drawings at
the Detroit Institute of Arts
every year, except during
wartime, until 1946. He was
an oil painting instructor at
Arts and Crafts and held his
first one-man show at the
Book House in Detroit.
He continued to exhibit in

private galleries, was com-
missioned and had his work
spotlighted at Rockefeller
Center and the Art Institute
of Chicago. Art patron Robert
H. Tannahill included Berns-
tein works in his Private col-
lection, which was donated to
the DIA.
The former Thelma Levine,
whom Mr. Bernstein later
married, was often a subject
of his works.
Mr. Bernstein's paintings
appear in many federal
offices as well as in the East
Lansing School for the Blind.
During World War II, he
studied drafting and
engineering and was part of a
team that devised de-icing
equipment to fit into the
wings of larger airplanes.
In 1949, Mr. Bernstein ex-
hibited at the Jewish Com-
munity Center, where he oc-
casionally taught art. He
held his last exhibit in 1954.
He died in July 1964. Since
then, his family has sought to
keep his works before the
public eye. .

Chajes Concerts Begin

The Julius Chajes Music
Fund concerts will begin
their second season on Nov. 2
at 3:30 p.m. in the Aaron
DeRoy Theater of the main
Jewish Community Center.
The concert will feature
Maria Cimarelli, soprano;
Robert Sorton, oboist; Be-
nedicta Gray, cellist; and
David Wilson, pianist and
harpsichordist.
Ms. Cimarelli has been a
featured guest artist during
the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra/International
and
Festival
Schubert
Brahms Festival. She has ap-
peared in concerts at Ken-
nedy Center and Carnegie
Hall, and has made a record-
ing for London Records under
