He gets "turned off' when a station employee is not courteous to a listener. "What turns me off most of all are people who work at our sta- tions who don't understand that every listener counts ... No matter how nasty or negative they are towards us, we nc..?d to treat them like royalty, and I get very upset if I ever see a listener being mishandled." WJR/WHYT News Director Bob Schuman calls Berkowitz a 24-hour radio wizard. He's always tuned into what's happening at the studios. "His car phone rings off the hook!" Berkowitz said he feels a sense of pride when he goes to a party and WHYT is play- ing. He is excited when he turns on his radio to WJR or WHYT and hears the station "humming." He devotes time to the Na- tional Association of Broad- casters and tries to affiliate himself with charitable ac- tivities. He joined the Jewish Community Center and he and his wife and two children are about to join Temple Is- rael. In his spare time he would rather listen to radio stations around the country than watch TV. He likes to associate with people in radio because they're "fun," but most of his friends "are people we live near." For Berkowitz, the radio business is more than just a job. And if he couldn't be in radio, is there anything else he would like to do? "I could easily play drums. I don't honestly know if I can do anything else or have a desire to. Radio is a lot of fun." ❑ Amos Oz, Tamir Due In Ann Arbor Hill Street Forum/Hillel will present Israeli writer, Amos Oz, as part of the fifth season of the Celebration of Jewish Arts Series at 8 p.m. Nov. 9 at Rackham Au- ditorium in Ann Arbor.
